    1. [IAALLAMA-L] GEORGE KELLY/KELLEY
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Kelley/Kelly Classification: Military Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Tk.2ADE/2354 Message Board Post: Tuesday, February 18, 1919 The Dubuque Times Journal Page 5, Col. 5 RETURNED WAUKON SOLDIER IS FETED Was Shot Through Knee and Narrowly Escaped Losing Leg. Special to the Times-Journal: Waukon, Ia. Feb. 18 -- Dr. and Mrs. John Haecker entertained at a 3 course 6 o'clock dinner in honor of George Kelly, who lately returned from France and was home on furlough from the Camp Dodge hospital. George was shot through the knee cap and at one time it was feared he would lose his leg above the knee, at any rate his limb will always be stiff. Several of his soldier friends were guests and the party spent a very enjoyable evening in talking over camp duties and Mr. Kelley gave a fine talk on his work with the army in France.

    3. Allamakee - Listers, For those of you who don't get the Iowa-List, it was announced today that several Winneshiek county naturalization indexes have been submitted to the IowaGenWeb archives. I browsed the several data-bases and recognize *many* Allamakee surnames. If you are not familiar with the Allamakee area, it is bordered to the west by Winneshiek county. Copies can be obtained from the Howard-Winneshiek Genealogy Society for a nominal copy fee and optional donation. Thank-you to Janice Sowers & the society for providing these records. The data-bases worth checking out!! Note: the search feature is temporarily not working, so a manual search must be done of each file. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ia/winneshiek/winneshiek.htm ---- Sharyl Co-County Coordinator, Allamakee Co. 1. [IAALLAMA-L] Mrs Fred Stock (1860-1943)
    2. ewbranham
    3. While researching the ancestry of William Henry Stock (b Apr, 1885) I have come to the following conclusions: 1. The obits of "Mrs. Fred Stock"... as posted by Mary Durr in Aug, 2001, and in Mar, 2002... are the obits of Sarah Roach Stock... second wife of Fred Roach and step-mother of his children: a. The obit of Mrs. Rose Hager (July 11, 1968)... also posted by Mary Durr in Aug, 2001... states that she was preceded in death by her parents (Fred and Elizabeth Roach Stock), siblings (Hattie, William, and Earl), and her step-mother. (Rose's brother John was still living at the time of Rose's decease.) b. An obit of Mrs. Fred Stock... posted by Mary Durr in Aug, 2001... lists her age (82) and the names of surviving children (Mrs. Hager, Mrs. Hattie Lauer, Will and John Stock... actually her step-children). c. An additional obit of the same Mrs. Fred Stock... posted by Mary Durr in Mar, 2002... includes the hand-written date of Apr 25, 1943 (Sarah Jane Roach Stock would have been age 82 at that time). d. The following recap of census records supports this conclusion: ....... 1900 West Virginia, Marshall Co, Union Dist, McMechan Census (ED 74, Sheet 8): The names of Earl, William, John, and Rose (4 of the 5 children) are all there in the Stuck household... with Fred, 47, as the widowed Head and Sarah Jane Roach, 39, as sister-in-law/housekeeper. ....... 1910 Iowa, Winneshiek Co, Frankville (ED 153, Sheet 8B): Only Fred, 68 (wrong... s/b 58), and Sarah, 49... now man and wife (married 8 years)... listed next to son/step-son William and his bride Laura. (The 1900 census record which shows Sarah as widowed may be wrong... as the 1910 census indicates that this is her 1st marriage and her surname in 1900 was the same as the maiden name her deceased sister Elizabeth.) ....... 1920 Iowa, Winneshiek Co, Frankville (ED 165, Sheet 8B): Again... just Fred, 68, and Sarah J, 58 (she is fudging a bit here)... listed 2nd down from son/step-son William, wife L. Josephine, and their 3 daughters. The friend for whom I have done this research does remember being told that he did indeed marry his sister-in-law... after she came to help with the children following his first wife's decease. 2. The earthly remains of Sarah Jane Roach Stock were interred in the Frankville Cemetery (Winneshiek Co.)... and not in the Zalmona Cem (Allamakee Co.). a. Her second obit states "Burial was in the Frankville Cemetery." b. The Allamakee Co cemetery list (found on the Allamakee genweb site) which shows both Sarah and Fred buried in the Zalmona Cem, appears to be incorrect. Source of info for her and for Fred was "DR"... Death records... apparently not from actual gravemarkers. (Fred's birthdate, Dec 1850 here, is probably wrong too... as 1900 census clearly reads "Dec 1852" and ages recorded in 1910 and 1920 censuses support the "2" rather than a "0". Am now wondering if actual burial site of the remains of husband Fred Stock was not also in Frankville Cemetery.) Hope this helps fellow Stock researchers. Am still struggling to find exact date of immigration of Fred Stock (1859 or 1869)... and with whom? He does not seem to be the son of either William or Frederich, sons of the older Gottlieb Stock (b 1799). Any input will be most deeply appreciated. Elaine

    3. Hi Elaine, Welcome to the Allamakee-L. I did not get your first post to the list, in either of my mailboxes! I believe that Rootsweb is still "tinkering" around, because this has been happening occasionally over the past couple of weeks. Sometimes the posts go out to the subscribers, but aren't archived. Other times, they go to the archives, but not to the subscribers. And occasionally, nothing at all happens!! Go figure! I have no way of knowing if some of our subscribers got your posting, although it is in the archives. If you don't get a copy in your mailbox within the next 24 hrs. go ahead and repost it. I'm sure that no one on the list will mind if they happen to get a second copy. Sharyl Co-County Coordinator, Allamakee Co. 3. Linton township does exist in Allamakee Co. and there is a small settlement with school and cemetery in section 16 which I believe to be the "Sixteen" you are referring to. I have plat maps for a number of time periods that show that cemetery. Also, if you'd include the name of the persons and dates you are searching for, I can look on the plat maps for them. That might add to what you have about them. Grace, born in Postville, Allamakee co. Is there someone who can help me? Also, is there anyone who might have a listing of some sort which would show the location of a gravesite within the cemetery. I plan on making a trip to the midwest and although I can see a way of getting through northeast Iowa I won't be able to spend very much time there. Is there perhaps someone who has been to this cemetery or lives close to it? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me. Sincerely, Mike Peterson > > >
