In 1866 my great-great grandparents, Timothy and Ellen Fitzgerald purchased land from a Thomas Scanlan and a Catherine Scanlan in Lafayette Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. (near Wexford, IA). William Scanlan is listed in one history of Lafayette township as one of its earliest settlers in the township. Several of the other family names you mentioned are among the near neighbors in Lafayette and Taylor townships. (Harper's Ferry is in Taylor township.)

I am looking for information on Siri Hansdatter and Jacob Anderson who emigrated to Allamakee in 1867 from the Jevenaker area of Hadeland Norway. They were 66 and 64 respectively and had children in the area, Hans Hanson and Andrew Jacobson. I do not know if they went by Anderson or possibly Sorlie, he had children in IA and MN who used the farm name of Sorlie. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Hello list, I live in Calif. and was in Lansing last month; however the library was closed so I couldn't check on an old newspaper article. I'm interested in an article (actually an obit.) about my g-grandfather, Wilson H. Foote, a brakeman for the Soo Line, who was killed in Almena, WI on Aug. 19, 1894. He was born near McGregor, however, he married a girl, Fannie Coy, who was born in Lansing. An article I found about his death, in a WI paper, made mention of "an article in the Lansing newspaper that said he had taught music there for several winters." So something must have been written about him in the Lansing newspaper. Would anyone be able to check this out for me? I would really appreciate anything you might find. By the way, Lansing is a beautiful little town!! Thanks, Linda

The picture shows a very smashed up pickup and a semi truck off in a field. The article reads as follows: FATAL ACCIDENT This picture was taken shortly after the accident that took place at 9:30 a.m. last Tuesday, April 21, about 2.3 miles southeast of Postville on Highway 18. William F. Schlee of Postville was fatally injured in the accident. According to the Clayton County Sheriff's report the pickup driven by Schlee was struck in the passenger side by the front of the semi. Schlee was ejected from his vehicle, and was dead at the scene. The driver of the semi, Lee A. Pulda of Prairie du Chien, Wis., was transferred to the hospital, treated and released. The report states that Schlee turned left into the path of the Pulda semi without yielding. On March 27, 1883, he was united in marriage with Miss Fredericke Schmidt at Garnavillo, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Sommeriatte. This union was blessed with seven children of whom the following survive: Henry Schlee of Gladbrook, Louis Schlee of Postville, Adelia (Mrs. Walter Casten) of Locust, and Edward Schlee of Grand Meadow township. The first six years of their wedded life was spent in the vicinity of Garnavillo, Clayton Center and St. Olaf, and then they moved to Grand Meadow township, where after a term of years as tenants on the farm of Henry Schuette they purchased a farm of their own which they occupied for twelve years and then retired, purchasing a home in Postville, where they have since resided. Mr. Schlee was an honest and upright man in all his dealings and during a long residence in this city and locality gained the respect and friendship of all who came withing the circle of his acquaintance. Following a short but serious illness he passed to his reward on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 1928. The funeral was held from the Lutheran church in this city last Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. E. T. This is a re-post of a message sent almost 24 hours ago but which is still wandering around out there somewhere in cyberspace. If you receive both you will note that this one is the "revised" edition. (Note: if you will click and enlarge to full screen you will find it much easier to read.) I have found the following record (Germans to America: Lists of passengers arriving at U. S. Ports /edited by Ira A. Glazier & P. William Filby, v 22): Ship: Hansa From: Bremen To: New York Arrived: 03 April 1869 And on the very long passenger list the following names were grouped together as follows: Hansemeier, Friedr. 35 M Farmer *1 Wilhelmine 30 F Unknown *2 Friedr. 8 M Child *3 Simon .04 M Infant *4 Simon 33 M Unknown *5 Stock, Friedr. 17 M Farmer *6 Hansemeier, Frdke 20 F Unknown *7 Strate, Heinr. 18 M Farmer *8 Krueger, Conrad 18 M Farmer *9 All of these seem to have Allamakee connections... as all were apparently ultimately buried in Allamakee or Winneshiek Co, IA. (The above cemetery records were found on the Allamakee genweb site... so a special thanks to the provider.) I have also found (on internet at local library): Immigrant: Stock, Friedrich Heinrich Anton Location: Iowa Year: 1869 Publication: Verdenhalven, Fritz, Die Auswanderer aus dem Fuerstentum Lippe (bis 1877). So am open to... and inviting... dialogue re any of the above info and my conclusions. The 1900 census record for Fred Stock (Marshall Co, W Va) indicates that he immigrated in 1869. (The 1910 census does give the year as 1859 but one of these two dates has to be wrong and I found no other Fred Stock/Stuck in the 1859 or 1869 immigration records referred to above.) Elaine

My apologies to the list for the duplicate messages re the Fred Stock family... and you may see another. I posted the original message re Mrs. Fred Stock and waited several hours for it to appear here (by default) before re-posting it... and eventually both postings appeared. This morning, at 2:30 AM, I posted another message re the immigration of Fred Stock (b abt 1851)... and was a bit surprised to see that... not today's message but... a third copy of the original post had arrived as new incoming mail. I will wait a few hours to see what happens before reposting... but brace yourself for a fourth copy of the post re Mrs. Fred StocK (b 1860). Thank, Elaine
