Many of you may not know, but today is the 6th birthday of the IAGenWeb. Allamakee Co. was among the early counties represented. I'd like to take this opportunity to applaud Roxanne Barth, the first CC of Allamakee Co. Roxanne was our CC from 1-20-1996 until the spring of 2001. She and her small group of volunteers toiled over their keyboards & "dug the basement, laid the foundation, framed the walls and added the roof" to the virtual genealogy library that is the Allamakee Co. website today. Today, as we continue to fill the bookshelves and build new rooms in Allamakee -- I want to thank Roxanne & her hearty band of volunteers for their hard work & dedication to a vision that continues to grow!! Sharyl

--Allamakee Co. Listers -- Effective immediately, the official message/query boards for Allamakee Co. will be the IAGen Boards. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iaallama/boards.htm We are making this move in anticipation of a future mandate from the IAGenWeb & hope that everyone will begin to use the new boards immediately. The IAGen boards will always be free to use -- we don't know if the same can be said for the GenConnect boards. Many Iowa county web-sites are using the new boards and report that the users are pleased with them once they get used to using them. You can also request that any posting you made to the GenConnect boards be reposted on the new board. To do this -- send an email to Sharyl. I urge all of you to take a look at the new boards -- and above all -- to start using them for all queries and obituaries. As before, bios, obits & records can also be sent to either Suzann or I for on-site posting on the Allamakee Co. website, the new boards do not change that. If you have comments or questions about these changes, please email Sharyl. Thank-you, Your CC's Sharyl [email protected] Suzann [email protected]

Hope to call you in the next day or two. It is exciting to hear from you. Have you been finding other cousins in your search for family? I hope so. As we write and/or call each other I can fill you in on a lot of recent Ralston cousins in our part of our family. Like you I also have a copy of the George Ralston book. That book led me to discover our Ewing ancestors through the 'Family Tree Maker' program almost five years ago. There is information in that data base about many of our grandparents (g-grandparents, g-g-grandparents ... g-g-g-g-g-grandparents, etc.) dating back to the 1600s. If all are in agreement, I can put you in touch with those who put together that information. I received my copy of Aunt Doris (Ralston) Wedo's book back in 1976, so the book must be at least 26 years old already. Seems like the years since then have flown by! Thank you for offering to help in my own search for ancestors. Would love to share, and to learn from you and to hopefully help you find new family information as well. Mom and I went to the Cresco reunion for the first time last year. Several of us hope to go to next years reunion. Would love to meet you there. Wonder if we met each other last year? I think I met a Melody there. She was really nice. While in Iowa, took pictures of family gravesites. You can see some of them at findingancestors.homestead.com

Your grandmother, Florence Brandos and my grandmother, Ruth Ralston Johnson, were sisters! Your grandmother and another sister Marie Tomlinson visited my grandmother back in the 60's or early 70's. I was a kid but I know it was then because our great-grandmother (their mother Mary Ralston) was gone and she died in 1965. Their sister, Doris Wedo, compiled a family history book about 20 or 25 years ago and I have a copy. My dad lives here in Waukon and he can tell you lots more. He and his mom and brother lived in California for a time in the forties and so he knows your family too. Please email me at [email protected] or call me 568-3075 or call my dad Milbourn Johnson at568-2034. There are quite a few relatives over this direction. There is also a Ralston reunion every June in Cresco. Hope we hear from you.

The address is 503 4th St. SW in waukon and it is now owned by Jim and Rose Magner. The former owner was an elderly lady by the name of Anna(?)Holahan. She died a number of years ago but I remember her. She belonged to St. Pat's Catholic church and my mother knew her. We gave her a ride home from church once when I was about 10 or 12 (about 36 or 38 years ago). She is buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery north of Waukon and I believe others of her relatives are buried there. Jim Magner is into geneology etc. and probably has information about the house.

His son Lyman Jr who I have been corresponding with says he had heard several stories including the one about Georgia and the one that his Dad just got fed up Aunt Wava and left. As a police officer I find these type of things to be intriguing. It would be nice to know excatly what happened to Lyman if I can find out. I downloaded a pedigree for Clarence which had the info on his parents and grandparents so I have that info. If you have any other info that you think I would like to have, please send it. I have been keeping Lyman Jr. informed of what I am finding out...Talk to you later..........John

I can tell you that Lyman was the son of Dighton Wilbur Bray and Nellie R Meikle . Dighton Wilbur Bray was the son of John Bray and Mary Ann Logan. They were my ggGrand parents. I would be glad to share what information I have on the family. I have also been looking for Lyman and information on his family. I would be interested in any information on him, his children and Wava. Would also like to know if there is a time frame when he might have left. I had not heard the Georgia story. What I had heard was that there was a family fight and he left saying he would never return. It has been a while since I looked at his file. I guess I concidered it a dead end. Thank you for your information. Cindy Bray Lovell

I just recently started doing some research on this line, for Lyman's son Lyman Jr. As you probably know there are several stories about what happened to Lyman. After a certain time period, my Aunt was able to get him listed as deceased. Any additional info you have would be greatly appreciated..Thanks John

DIED IN A STUPOR Sudden Death of Mrs. Frater, of Harper's Ferry, From the Effects of an Overdose of Chloroform There was a very sad occurrence in the town of Harper's Ferry, Allamakee county, yesterday, resulting in the death of Mrs. Frater, wife of Archibald Frater, Esq., a prominent citizen and grain buyer formerly of Farley. Mrs. Frater had been greatly afflicted with neuralgia and headache for several days. On Wednesday last she went to a drug store and purchased a quantity of chloroform to use as a relief from excessive pain. Yesterday, Friday morning, Mr. Frater left his house about 9 o'clock, to attend to his business duties, his wife being in a tolerable state of health. After his departure it seems her disease took an unusually distressing form, and she resorted to a larger dose of chloroform as a curative. She soaked a large cloth in the liquid and laid down on a bed with the cloth covering her mouth. The strength of the narcotic completely overcome her physical powers, and when Mr. Frater returned home for dinner, about 12 o'clock, he found her lying numb and insensible to all his efforts to awaken animation. Physicians were called and every possible method of medical skill was use to recover the lady to life but to no avail - she had passed the limit of mortal existence. The event produced a profound sensation at Harper's Ferry, and rumors of suicide were rife, but these are worthless, and without the slightest foundation in truth. The funeral will be held at Farley, on Monday. Source: Dubuque Herald, August 23, 1873 NOTE: Mrs. Frater died in Harper's Ferry and the funeral may have been in Farley, but she is buried in Old East Paint Creek Cemetery in Dalby (according to the Allamakee County Burial records book by Woodmansee).
