My name is Pauline Hyde and I live in County Cork. My grandfather, John Hyde, left Ballyvourney in 1909 to a farm close to Cork city. My father, Michael Hyde, who was born in 1920 (and still alive!), has told me alot about the Hydes. His oral history goes back to 1848, a Daniel Hyde. I wrote it all down a few years ago and have it stored away. Those of you who have visited the place, will know that there's something special about Ballyvourney and Coolea. Even though 'we' left in 1909, we always considered that somehow, that's really where we're from! We have visited the area with my father many times, especially to the church and well of Saint Gobnait. Gobnait was a Celtic mystic..on recent visits, locals told us about miracles she performed..ie, when she was alive 1500 years ago! That's how long the Ballyvourney memory is. My sister's name is Abbey, the English version of Gobnait and a sure sign of Ballyvourney/Coolea connections. By the w! ay, I even know the location of the former Hyde household in Coolea. True, I don't think there are many Hydes left in Ballyvourney, but the connection does die hard. Please contact me and I will share what I can can. Reagrds, Pauline Hyde
