    3. Hello Debbie, Thank you for writing; I am replying as best I can but will also copy it to rootsweb in the hope that it may be of some interest to others as well. We clearly have got too many Edwards sons of Roberts to cope with here! Maybe they are one and the same but still need further unravelling. The Edward Hyde that I refer to was born in 1667, the only son of Robert Hyde of Hyde and Norbury. Robert, the second son and ultimately the heir of his father, another Edward Hyde who took the Parliamentary side during the Civil War. It was this earlier Ed. [Second or third son of his father, another Robert Hyde, grandson of Hamnet Hyde [b. abt 1563. bur. 9 Jul 1656]/Mary Warren of Poynton, who was born c. 1642, buried at Stockport 16 Apr. 1670, twice married and had no less than twenty two children] who restored our Hyde Hall in Hyde. He had married Anne Brooke of Norton Priory, Cheshire daughter of Sir Richard Brooke whose wife Catherine Neville had royal blood in their veins. Through this marriage the later Hydes of Hyde and their descendants the Hyde Clarkes, could claim descent from Edward 1., King of England from the Kings of France, Castille and Laon plus a few extra Counts and Earls. The Hydes of Hyde & Norbury were Royalists. The Hydes of Denton and Haughton were Parliamentarians and Non-conformists. Back to our first Edward, b. 1667, he sold the Norbury and other estates about 1690, 'fearing ruine' went to America, having been appointed Governor of North Carolina, where he died, leaving a son, Edward and two daughters, Anne and Penelope. Edward Hyde, surviving son of Ed. the Gov. was living in 1721 in England; but died a bachelor in Spain before 1728. He is said to have been a sailor. His sister Anne married George Clarke and by a special marriage arrangement of purchase, Edward Hyde transferred his estates to him in order to avoid a law suit with Sergeant Bretland of Thorncliffe Hall, who for a time held the remaining Hyde estates as Mortgagee. The family line was then continued through the issue of sister Anne, by her marriage to George Clarke and adopting the name of Hyde. That is the story of my Eds. & Robs. There is an extension which might throw more light on it. Anne Hyde was born 28 Nov. 1693 and baptised in Stockport. She married, in 1714 George Clarke of Swanswick, near Bath. Her husband having been appointed Lieutenant Governor of the province of New York, she accompanied him to America. He purchased land of 100 acres on Hampstead Plain, Long Island where he took up residence in a rural style villa which he called Hyde Park. It was here that many of his children were born. Gov. Clarke left NY on 14 Jun 1745, proceeded to Boston, a millionaire, and returned to to England to take possession of the estate back in Hyde. This story seems to go on forever and becomes yet more tangled. Their firstborn son, George Clarke of Hyde, and of Swanswick, co. Somerset Esq. Secretary of the Province of NY. b. abt 1715. died 11 Nov. 1777 bur. at Stockport, Cheshire. 2nd. son Robert killed at Carthegena abt. 1740. 3rd. son Edward, heir apparent, died 6 Sep 1776. Bur. Stockport. marr. Elizabeth. dau of ...Guthrie, of Jamaica Esq. [marr. 3 times all of Jamaica] 4th. son Hyde Clarke died of fever on an expedition to Oswego c. 1742. It was the 3rd son, Edward Clarke/Elizabeth Guthrie who carried the main succession, with only son George Hyde Clarke of Hyde, Esq. b.1742, died in London, bur. in Denton, Lancs. He eloped with Miss Sophie Astley & had illegitimate issue, leaving his main heir, George Clarke of Hyde, Esq. and also of Hyde Hall, Springfield, Otsego, State of New York, b. 28 Apr. 1768. He died 4 Nov. 1835. The next generation fizzled out with the death of Edward Hyde Clarke 25 Dec. 1873. If this can help you in any way then I am very pleased. It IS complicated. The bit that confuses me, are your details of your Robt. b. 1642 [same as mine], son of Edward [same as mine] of Norbury & Hyde, bur. at Stockport 13 Apr. 1669 / Wife Anne, dau. of Sir Richard Brooke of Norton, Knt. She was known as 'Anne Hyde of Hyde Mill' but we part ways over your Edward b. 1628, Earl of Clarendon. My Edward b. 1628 described above, most certainly was NOT the Earl of Clarendon. The Clarendon connection goes right the way back to Lawrence Hyde, son of Robt. of Norbury & Hyde who died 1538, and his third marriage to the dau. of Sir John Boydell. Lawrence moved south to become Lawrence Hyde of West Hatch. He died 7 June 1590. It is the descendants of HIS family who became the Hydes, Earls of Clarendon & Hydes of Berkshire etc. I have not studied the Pedigree and descendancy of Lawrence Hyde Sources: Pedigrees of Hyde of Norbury & Hyde, and Thomas Middleton's 'History of Hyde'. I hope that I have not made too many mistakes - I usually manage to get something wrong. I look forward to any comments and corrections!
