    1. HYDE ancestors re: I have a book on Hydes
    2. Sue Fielding
    3. I read with some surprise the letter from marwoodpoint@aol.com which states that "William HYDE, the first of Norwich, Conn. was a contemporary of Sir Robert Hyde and the Earl of Clarendon. It is not known from what part of England he came or to what family he belonged to" etc. I would like to clear the picture a little if I may because these early facts are indeed known. William Hyde, b. abt. 1599-1606 was the 4th. son of Robert Hyde of Norbury and Hyde and his wife Beatrice Calverly. William matriculated at Christ College, Cambridge and was a contemporary of Rev. Peter Bulkely who was founder of concord, Mass. William went to Leydon in Holland before sailing to US to be one of the founding fathers of Hartford, Conn. The Manor or Hall of Norbury is in the county of Cheshire and lies just some 5 miles to the south east of Stockport. This Hyde family also owned the Manor, Hall and estate of Hyde which was sited on the east bank of the River Tame on the west side of the township of Hyde some eight or so miles to the north east of Norbury. The Manor of Norbury, at least a re-built version of it, still exists in a dilapidated, uninhabited and forlorn state. The last, very elegant Hall of the Manor of Hyde in Hyde was demolished in 1857 and is now a mobile-home site. William's father was Robert Hyde Esq. of Norbury and Hyde. He died at Norbury 22 March 1614 and buried in the Parish Church of St. Mary in Stockport, Cheshire on 5 April. His Inquisition Post Mortem was not held until 1620. His mother Beatrix or Beatrice was the daughter of Sir William Calverley of York county. She was buried at St. Mary's Stockport 21 Dec. 1624. The parents of Robert Hyde Esq. were another Robert Hyde Esq. who died 17 Jan 1570/71 and his second wife Jane daughter of William Davenport of Bramall, Esq. The first confirmed Hyde and founder of one of the most ancient families in Cheshire, was Mathew de Hyde [Mathew de Hida, b. abt 1167] who lived in the 12th. century. He is considered to be the son of Mathew de Bramall, from a district just to the south of Manchester City and west of Stockport. The Bramalls or Bromales are believed to be decendants of Hugo de Massey, a Norman Baron from Macey on the Brittany/Normandy border near the city of Caen. Mathew de Hyde [the township of Hyde did not then exist as such but was part of the Estate of the Bagguley family in an area better known as Godley, a particularly ancient settlement.] had two sons, Robert and Richard. Robert became Lord of Norbury in 1220. Robert had two sons, John of Norbury who succeeded to the Hyde estates and Alexander who succeeded to the Denton estates to became the progenitor of the Hydes of Denton in Lancashire on the west bank of the same River Tame. Denton still has its Hyde Hall, an exquisite ancient farm but is sadly being allowed to fall into a tragic state of disrepair. The Hyde family now established 2 separate lines. The Hydes of Norbury and Hyde under Sir John Hyde and the Hydes of Denton. To complicate the issue, by 1450, a son of the Hydes of Norbury and Hyde moved to a small village called Haughton which lies ON the river Tame exactly halfway between Denton and Hyde thus starting the Hydes of Haughton. Another descendant of the Hydes of Norbury and Hyde, one Ralph Hyde, abt. 1357 married Alice daughter of John de Venables and founded the House of Urmston, a village near Bramall. So there are four separate lines of Hydes all living within a few miles of each other. Hyde of Norbury and Hyde. Hyde of Denton. Hyde of Haughton. Hyde of Urmston. There are other lines also in the area, the Hydes of Mottram descended from Denton, the Hydes of Mellor and Ludworth etc. and Giles Hyde abt. 1424 who went to Hopton Walford in Salop but they do not fit so easily into the overall picture. The descendancy of three of these families has been extremely well documented and recorded and the details can be easily found elsewhere. About 1469 Robert Hyde Esq. of Hyde and Norbury was born. He had three different wives. 1. Margaret, dau of Richard Holland of Denton. 2. a daughter of .... Skargill of York 3. a daughter of Sir John Boydell It was the third son of the marriage with the daughter of Sir John Boydell who grew up and left home, moving south to West Hatch in Wiltshire. His name was Lawrence Hyde Esq. of West Hatch who died 7th. June 1590 and buried in Tisbury Church, Wilts. It was his line that became the Royal Connection with his grandson Edward Earl of Clarendon whose daughter Anne Hyde married the future King James 11 and their daughters who became Queens of England, Mary and Anne. I hope that this may be of some help to other researchers and I hope too that I have not made too many mistakes. Sue.

    1. Hydes from NY on MA census list for 1850
    2. Judy
    3. While searching the 1850 census for Lee, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, I found a family of Hydes that might be interesting to the list. Name/Age/Sex/Occupation Alexander Hyde 35 M Teacher Cornelia H. Hyde 31 F George H. Hyde 9 M Adeline Hyde 8 F Sarah C. Hyde 6 F Albert A. Hyde 2 M Mary R. Hyde 3/12 F Lucy F. Hyde 79 F above all born in Mass. Also in the household were various students, including the following. Joseph M. Hyde 11 M John M. Hyde 9 M Josephine H. Hyde 16 F Sarah L. Hyde 12 F above all born in NY. The above mentioned Lucy F. Hyde was the widow of Alvan Hyde D.D.. He was born Norwich, CT 2 Feb. 1768, ordained 6 Jun 1792 and died 4 Dec. 1833. Lucy was born at Sandwich, MA 16 Nov. 1770 and died 27 Aug. 1852. I would assume, and I am aware of the dangers of assuming, that Alexander is the son of Alvan and Lucy Hyde. Another son, Alvan Hyde Jr. was a minister, also. All this information is contained on tombstones in the Fairmont Cemetery, Lee, Berkshire, MA. Hope this information is of some use to a researcher, someday. Judy, in NC Researching: Pinney, Packard, Crawford, Piercy, See, Barden, Bradford, Etheridge, George, Hatch, Alden, Frost, White, Buckland, Hyde, Eastman. All in New England. I trace my family history so I will know who to blame.......
