The Leatherwood were Indians so as far as that goes I can find to records. I believe her name was Nancy Leatherwood but it has been years since I have done any family research. I do know my family tree is full of William and Benjamin Hydes.

    3. June, I was just putting away my papers when I spotted this snippet:- Sir Robert Hyde, 1595-1665, of Heale, Salisbury, 2nd. son of Lawrence. Salisbury [eight miles east of Dinton] features as King Charles' H.Q. based at Heale House, three miles out of Salisbury. Katherine, described as a'a worthy, discrete loyal Lady' was the widow of Col. George Gunter, the First Cousin of Edward, Earl of Clarendon. She was also the Sister-in-Law to the Mrs. Hyde of Heale House and, Lawrence Hyde was her nephew. Lawrence Hyde was Earl of Rochester, First Lord of the Treasury, and made Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1700. Master of the Robes to Charles 11, made Baron Hyde of Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire as well as Viscount Hyde of Kenilworth, Warwickshire. Marr. Henrietta Boyle. He was also the brother of Edward Earl of Clarendon. Sue

    3. Hello June, Thanks for your interesting letter. I am very intrigued by your Jonathan Hyde born in London 1626 being the son of Robert and Alice Crompton of Denton, Lancs. Robert was born in 1604, being 35 yrs. of age when his father William Hyde died in 1639, which would make him 22 yrs. old when Jonathan was born. According to the compiled pedigree of 1645 and records of the Hydes of Denton, Robert Hyde Esq. of Denton married Alice Crompton age 20. 3rd. dau. and heiress of Thomas Crompton of Crompton by Rochdale, 17th. April 1624. Their first child Anne was born 10 months later. There were 15 children altogether recorded as follows:- Anne Hyde b. 5 Feb 1624/5, bap 23rd. = Rev. William Bell of Elswick and Huyton. Later living at Sinderland Hall. Elinor Hyde b. 10 May 1626, bap 17th. died 18 Apr. 1650 Katherine Hyde b. 24 May 1627, bap 30th.=1. William Meeke Minister of Salford Chapel 2. Ralph Ardern William Hyde b. 12 Sep 1628, bap 20th. S.P. age 7 yrs. Bur. at Stockport 2 June 1635 Robert Hyde b. 7 Jan. 1628. bap 12th. bur. at Denton 1699 = Mary Jackson Deborah Hyde b. 7 Sep 1632, bap 9 Dec.= John Wadsworth of Swathe, Co. York Grace Hyde b. 29 Nov 1634, bap 9 Dec. bur. 18 Jan 1688/9 William Hyde b. 30 dec. bap Jan. Executor to his father's Will dd. 10 Jul 1682 Mary Hyde b. 11 Jan 1638, bap 22nd. Jane Hyde b. 27 Aug 1640 bap 2nd. Sep Samuel Hyde b.11 Aug 1641 bap 25th. Later became a Deacon Alice Hyde b. 30 Sep 1642, bap 8 Jan. marr. at Mottram in Londendale to John Hollingworth of Tintwistle Elizabeth Hyde b.2 Jun 1644 at manc. bap. 6th. died 19 Nov. 6am. 1645 Martha Hyde b. 14 Jul 1645, bap 20th. died 16 Jul 1652 Elizabeth Hyde b. 28 Sep 1646, bap 8 Oct. These births are all entered in the family Bible and also in the parish registers of the Collegiate and Parish Church of Manchester Cathedral including Elizabeth decd. that was bap. at Manchester. Of your Jonathan there is no sign at all. As he would have been the first born son, it is provocative to imagine that Robt. Hyde and Alice Crompton may have lost him in London and not mention him in the Bible. Do you have the sources of information as to his birth/parentage? I would love to see it please. Jonathan is not a name used before with the Denton Hydes until a hundred years later. John is more usual. I have cross checked with the Hydes of Norbury and Hyde but I can see no connection there either. There is another possibility which looks more promising. You say that you are descended from the Earl of Clarendon's line. Edward Hyde 1st. Earl of Clarendon was of the family Hyde of Dinton in Wiltshire. I am thinking of the Hydes of West Hatch and Dinton [six miles apart]in Wiltshire. There is a Robert Hyde of West Hatch b. 1600 who marr. Ann Hyde of West Hatch in 1626. [I have some of the Wiltshire pedigrees but they are incomplete regarding subsequent offspring.] Is is possible that this Robert Hyde of Dinton [not Denton, Lancs.] could be the father of your Jonathan and Samuel? [There was a Robert Hyde b. 1560 of Dinton/West Hatch =1589 Anne Castillian. [Her ancestors have royal blood in their veins] They had a dau. Ann Hyde b.1589 who marr. Robert Hyde of Norbury & Hyde but she died Nov. 1638 having had 12 children, [including the Henry Hyde "now in Maryland"] so that does not fit your pattern either. What is coincidental is that we have 2 Roberts marrying 2 Ann Hydes! My thought is that Anne b. 1589 is the oldest sister to Robert b. 1600. Anne b. 1589 Elizabeth b. 1595 bap Salisbury Cathedral Hamnet b. 1598 Robert b. 1600 wed Ann Hyde 1626 West Hatch ****** Lawrence b. 1601 I do not have any records of the families of those three sons. If you can, try and find out about the Dinton and West Hatch bunch. That would be most interesting and yield more details. That is about all that I can suggest - happy hunting and keep in touch. 1. Hyde Family of Newton, MA
    2. Hi List, I'm new to the list, but not to Hyde genealogy. You may have seen my posts on other forums so ignore this if you have. I'm currently searching for the information on the following family from Newton, MA. John Hyde b. abt 1795 (or Dec. 18, 1799) in Newton, MA; m. abt. 1828; d. March 28, 1886 Newton, MA + Hannah Woodcock b. November 13, 1808 Natick, MA; d. December 16, 1874 in Newton, MA Children all born in Newton, MA: John Hyde b. Jan. 2nd 1829; d. 1849 Natick, MA (unmarried) Mary Hyde b. March 16th 1830 William Hyde b. July 22nd 1833, d. IA + Jane O'Brien Elizabeth Hyde b. March 10th 1836 Caroline Hyde b. April 6th 1850 Alfred Hyde b. Feb. 6th 1853; d. Natick, MA + Martha Wentworth John Hyde lived in the Newton Almshouse from about 1830 to his death. Most, if not all of his children were born there. I'm most interested in finding a birth record of John or a marriage record of John and Hannah to verify his parents as Gershom and Caty Hyde as stated in Jackson's book "History of Newton, MA". His death record does not state parents names. I'm also interested in finding spouses of the children and death information. Are there any other references that someone could recommend? Any information or guidance would be appreciated. Sincerely Carolyn

    3. Hello Debbie, Thank you for writing; I am replying as best I can but will also copy it to rootsweb in the hope that it may be of some interest to others as well. We clearly have got too many Edwards sons of Roberts to cope with here! Maybe they are one and the same but still need further unravelling. The Edward Hyde that I refer to was born in 1667, the only son of Robert Hyde of Hyde and Norbury. Robert, the second son and ultimately the heir of his father, another Edward Hyde who took the Parliamentary side during the Civil War. It was this earlier Ed. [Second or third son of his father, another Robert Hyde, grandson of Hamnet Hyde [b. abt 1563. bur. 9 Jul 1656]/Mary Warren of Poynton, who was born c. 1642, buried at Stockport 16 Apr. 1670, twice married and had no less than twenty two children] who restored our Hyde Hall in Hyde. He had married Anne Brooke of Norton Priory, Cheshire daughter of Sir Richard Brooke whose wife Catherine Neville had royal blood in their veins. Through this marriage the later Hydes of Hyde and their descendants the Hyde Clarkes, could claim descent from Edward 1., King of England from the Kings of France, Castille and Laon plus a few extra Counts and Earls. The Hydes of Hyde & Norbury were Royalists. The Hydes of Denton and Haughton were Parliamentarians and Non-conformists. Back to our first Edward, b. 1667, he sold the Norbury and other estates about 1690, 'fearing ruine' went to America, having been appointed Governor of North Carolina, where he died, leaving a son, Edward and two daughters, Anne and Penelope. Edward Hyde, surviving son of Ed. the Gov. was living in 1721 in England; but died a bachelor in Spain before 1728. He is said to have been a sailor. His sister Anne married George Clarke and by a special marriage arrangement of purchase, Edward Hyde transferred his estates to him in order to avoid a law suit with Sergeant Bretland of Thorncliffe Hall, who for a time held the remaining Hyde estates as Mortgagee. The family line was then continued through the issue of sister Anne, by her marriage to George Clarke and adopting the name of Hyde. That is the story of my Eds. & Robs. There is an extension which might throw more light on it. Anne Hyde was born 28 Nov. 1693 and baptised in Stockport. She married, in 1714 George Clarke of Swanswick, near Bath. Her husband having been appointed Lieutenant Governor of the province of New York, she accompanied him to America. He purchased land of 100 acres on Hampstead Plain, Long Island where he took up residence in a rural style villa which he called Hyde Park. It was here that many of his children were born. Gov. Clarke left NY on 14 Jun 1745, proceeded to Boston, a millionaire, and returned to to England to take possession of the estate back in Hyde. This story seems to go on forever and becomes yet more tangled. Their firstborn son, George Clarke of Hyde, and of Swanswick, co. Somerset Esq. Secretary of the Province of NY. b. abt 1715. died 11 Nov. 1777 bur. at Stockport, Cheshire. 2nd. son Robert killed at Carthegena abt. 1740. 3rd. son Edward, heir apparent, died 6 Sep 1776. Bur. Stockport. marr. Elizabeth. dau of ...Guthrie, of Jamaica Esq. [marr. 3 times all of Jamaica] 4th. son Hyde Clarke died of fever on an expedition to Oswego c. 1742. It was the 3rd son, Edward Clarke/Elizabeth Guthrie who carried the main succession, with only son George Hyde Clarke of Hyde, Esq. b.1742, died in London, bur. in Denton, Lancs. He eloped with Miss Sophie Astley & had illegitimate issue, leaving his main heir, George Clarke of Hyde, Esq. and also of Hyde Hall, Springfield, Otsego, State of New York, b. 28 Apr. 1768. He died 4 Nov. 1835. The next generation fizzled out with the death of Edward Hyde Clarke 25 Dec. 1873. If this can help you in any way then I am very pleased. It IS complicated. The bit that confuses me, are your details of your Robt. b. 1642 [same as mine], son of Edward [same as mine] of Norbury & Hyde, bur. at Stockport 13 Apr. 1669 / Wife Anne, dau. of Sir Richard Brooke of Norton, Knt. She was known as 'Anne Hyde of Hyde Mill' but we part ways over your Edward b. 1628, Earl of Clarendon. My Edward b. 1628 described above, most certainly was NOT the Earl of Clarendon. The Clarendon connection goes right the way back to Lawrence Hyde, son of Robt. of Norbury & Hyde who died 1538, and his third marriage to the dau. of Sir John Boydell. Lawrence moved south to become Lawrence Hyde of West Hatch. He died 7 June 1590. It is the descendants of HIS family who became the Hydes, Earls of Clarendon & Hydes of Berkshire etc. I have not studied the Pedigree and descendancy of Lawrence Hyde Sources: Pedigrees of Hyde of Norbury & Hyde, and Thomas Middleton's 'History of Hyde'. I hope that I have not made too many mistakes - I usually manage to get something wrong. I look forward to any comments and corrections!
