    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hyde, Bard, Boyd, Perry, Beers, Holbrook, Wooster Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4Yk.2ACIB/1150 Message Board Post: This is the second half of the main chunk of material on the Hyde family in Dr. F. E. Weeks' History of Wakeman (Huron County, Ohio). See previous post for Bible info. [Note: the following occurs directly after the Hyde Bible information and appears to be Week’s synthesis of information from a variety of sources. Surnames are arranged alphabetically in this work] HYDE, Merritt- born in Oxford, Conn., Jan. 2, 1794, was a son of Daniel and Eunice ( Bard ) Hyde. Daniel was a son of Abijah and Mary ( Holbrook ) Hyde. Abijah was a son of Daniel and Deborah ( Perry ) Hyde. Daniel the elder, was a descendent, perhaps grandson of Humphrey Hyde, who came from England and settled in Fairfield, Conn., in 1639? (1669) Merritt Hyde married Sally Boyd, Jan. 25, 1815. Their children are given above. The son Merritt I was killed by being thrown from a horse. Mr. Hyde came to Wakeman with his brother-in-law, William Beers in May 1823, [Note: the entry for William Beers gives a date of May 1824], when according to report, there were only thirteen people in the township. He either sold or traded his Connecticut property for land in Wakeman, getting deeds for 113 acres of Lot 35 and 67 acres of Lot 25. He made a start toward a clearing and returned to Connecticut. He came again, with his family after the birth of Mariette. About 1834, he built a frame house on his farm, on the center road, west of the village, which is yet standing in 1938. He was an enterprising man and operated an ashery and store and distillery. Hyde and Bottesford operated a distillery near the grist mill, and Hyde had another north of his hous. Hanford & Pierce sold Hyde and Bottsford a quarter acre of land, in 1833, for a still house. Mr. Hyde’s mother was very much opposed to his making liquor, and lost her mind over it and set the distillery on fire. William Bissell told of this experience, when a boy, with Mr. Hyde. His father sent him on horseback from their home in Clarksfield to Mr. Hyde’s for a gallon of whiskey, for use in harvesting. The boy got the whiskey all right, buy when he went to ford the Brandy Creek, his horse put his head down to drink, and the boy slid over the horse’s head into the creek, and the jug was broken. He knew that if he went home without the whiskey, he would have to go back, and perhaps get a licking in the bargain; so he returned and Mr. Hyde, very generously, gave him another jug filled with whiskey, and he finally got home in good shape, with a warm place in his heart for Mr. Hyde. The post office was kept in his house for a number of years. When the Vermillion and Ashland railroad was projected and construction commenced, Mr. Hyde kept a store. He also bought ashes and made potash. A man would go around with a team and wagon with a high box to the farm houses and buy ashes at six cents a bushel, paying the same from his peddler’s chest of merchandise which he carried with him, or the farmer could go to the store and receive store pay. Mr. Hyde was the Indian agent for the government also. He died May 1 1874. The wife died Feb. 2, 1889, at the age of 94. Sally Maria Hyde, daughter of Merritt, married William Humphrey of Townsend, June 28 1855, and lived in Townsend until her death Oct. 22 1888. Susan Mariette Hyde, daughter of Merritt, married Lemuel B. Pierce, of Wakeman, Nov. 27, 1867, and died March 19, 1907. Merritt Monroe Hyde, called “Monroe”, Hyde, married Elizabeth Church, daughter of Elisha Church, of Wakeman, July 18, 1859, and began housekeeping in a house across the road from his father’s, the Mott house. After the death of his father, he moved to the homestead. In 1883 he moved to Texas and later to Elkmont, Alabama, where he died Nov 13, 1920. His wife died Sept. 7, 1892. His children were: Merritt Humphrey Hyde, of Wakeman, William Daniel, of Memphis, Tenn.; Sarah Francis, of Ala. HYDE: Garry B. – brother of Merritt, was born in Oxford, Conn., May 1 1795. He came to Wakeman in 1827, but returned to Connecticut after a couple of years. He was married to Caroline Wooster, July 17, 1831. In the spring of 1833, they, with their infant son, Henry Wooster Hyde, came to Huron on their way to Chicago, and stopped to visit at the home of Merritt Hyde. On their way to Wakeman two highwaymen attempted to hold them up. This so terrified Mrs. Hyde that he as persuaded to give up the Chicago trip, and he purchased a farm in Vermillion, on the lake shore. Subsequently they removed to Athens, Alabama, where he died Aug 9, 1879. Mrs. Hyde died in Texas, Aug. 14, 1902. They had two sons and four daughters. Mr. Hyde’s father died in 1807 and the mother followed her sons and died in Ohio in 1862, at the age of 97. She was an aunt of Sheldon and Hepsy Smith, of Wakeman. She had ten brothers who fought in the Revolutionary war. She came to Ohio ! in 1834.”

Weeks ca 1938. This version is a typed copy of Weeks’ original manuscript with index, both done by Myron A. Allgood in 1988. Myron Allgood provided me with a photocopy of the above a few years before he died. The work is 146 pages, not counting the index. I presume that Allgood provided copies to the Ohio Genealogical Society in Mansfield, Ohio and the Huron County Historical Society. Few copies exist. Weeks also did a history of Clarksfield Township and covered local history in his paper, The Clarksfield Bee. The Ohio Genealogical Society has a photocopy of a scrapbook of historical articles from the Bee written by Weeks and letters about the past from residents and others who had moved away. Wakeman Township is in the north eastern corner of Huron County, Ohio. It is about 8 miles south of Lake Erie and 8 miles west of Oberlin, Ohio. Luther Hyde was my grandfather and his parents were Albert Hyde and Cansada McClendon. The children of Albert and Cansada are: Luther, Clyde, Claude, Willie Mae, Inez, Leona, Jimmy, and Grace. They were my dad's aunts and uncles so he was able to give me their names. I have been searching this family for a long time and have found very little information. Albert was born Dec. 1876 in MS and died Jan. 1961 in Alabama. He is buried at Little Vine Church. Cansada Polly McClendon was born May 26, 1886 and died April 15, 1967 in Illinois. I know that Albert and Cansada divorced and she moved to Illinois to live with her daughter. I have spoken with several older family members who have told me that Albert's father was Jim Hyde who was married to Sarah? and married second to Ellen? Sarah was suppose to be the mother of the children but my dad can only remember Ellen. Her referred to her as Granny Ellen. I ! was also told Jim was married to Molly?....but I don't have any verification of that. Jim was a peddler and he just disappeared. The family never knew what happened to him. Do you have any more information on this family? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Cindy

Their parents were: Sarah Elmira Kennedy Emmons and Theodore C. Hyde. They moved from Wharton County, Texas to Kerr County in 1879 and settled on Indian Creek. Theodore C. Hyde's brother, BJ Hyde made the move at the same time with his family. Theodore C and BJ were born in Louisiana. Their fathers name was Benjamin J, but I haven't been able to track down his mother's name. Benjamin J was born in 1813 in Davidson County, TN. His parents were Benjamin Hyde and Milly Cherry and his ggparents were: John Henry Hyde and Rebecca Warren Hyde. If you can add anything to this, please let me know. I have lots more information also. Sarah Elmira Emmons was born in Lavaca County in 1855. Her father, Hiram Runnels Emmons was born in 1830 in Hinds County, MS. He married Missouri Tabitha Kennedy in 1852. They had four little girls and Missouri died in 1860 giving birth to the youngest. The four little girls were raised by Missouri's sister, Sarah Kennedy Townsend, and Hiram joined the Confederacy--3rd Texas (Yager) Cavalry.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4Yk.2ACIB/1145 Message Board Post: First of all, Mary and others I am letting my taelanet email lie dormant to play dead to spammers I was getting up to 15,000 spams a day. So you can't email me for now. My hyde research has has some distressing setbacks. I have been working under the assumption for some time now that my great grandmother Sarah E.Hyde Lewter was the daughter of Anthony Gray Hyde and Mary Pleasant. This no longer appears to be the case. I selected them as they were the only Hydes found on census records to have a daughter named Sarah the right age to be my great grandma in the state of Texas at the right time. THe census records did say that Anthony and Mary Hydes daughter Sarah was a Sarah J or G and I wrote that off to illegible handwriting and also stated that she was born in Texas and my Sarah on the 1880 census and on a widows pension appliccation form in the last months of her life also stated that she had been born in Arkansas. I have since found the othert Sarah Hyde mentioned in some other writings as being Sarah Jennings Hyde which is strange as there was a Sarah Gray Hyde Jennings also who was the daughter of John Hansford Hyde and Polly S! trouther Gray Hyde. This Sarah was the sister of Anthony Gray Hyde. I think, though nothing seems certain with this family. Way too many Sarah Hyde in Texas in the 1800's. Anyway. every document I have says my Sarah was Sarah E Hyde. She married my great grandpa Robert Bolin Lewter in Tyler, Smith co. Texas on 24 DEC 1876. The marriage license lists her as Mrs. S.E. Franklin. THis is at least a 2nd marriage for her. It is the 3rd for Robert Lewter. HIs first two wives were thought to have died in childbirth and I have no idea what happen to Mr. Franklin. I know her last name is Hyde from two sources. The book TEXANS WHO WORE THE GRAY by Syndney Johnson refers to her as Mrs. Sarah E Franklin nee Hyde when she is mentioned in a bio of Robert Lewter as his 3rd wife. And my grandfather filled out a Social Secuirty form called and SS-5 which required he put down the maiden name of his mother and he listed her as Sallie Hyde. SHe died in Tyler, Texas Feb. 1914. She filled out this form in the fall in Sept. 1913. She stated at that time her age was 58, that she had lived in Texas 53 years which would have made her 5 when she came to Texas and she further answers a question pertaining to how long she lived in SMith co. and she states 50 years. That would have put her in Smith county or some of her Hyde family in SMith between 1860 and 1870. I can find no family with a daughter named Sarah abt age 5 on the 1860 census in either Ark. or Texas. I can find no Hydes in Smith county at all. I know that Smith and Nacogdoches were once part of one another which again made me think her part of the Anthony Gray Hyde family or one of his brothers. But if he was her uncle I need to find the brother who stopped off in Ark. I need to find anything on Smith county Hydes between 1860 and 1876. Barb
