June, Have you tried the US Census? You know (or have an idea) about the place. All the names of each family member from the 1850 census on are listed on the census, as well as lots of other useful data, like places of birth of parents, etc. Looking at your info, you should be able to find James living with his parents in the 1850 Census. If not, you know where he was living in 1870, between Jennie and Matilda's birth. Look at where he was born there. Personally, I check each census for each ancestor, e.g.; each one where and when they were living. That way I get a snap shot of the family every ten years. The 1930 census is available now (or very soon).
