We all have the responsibility to take proper action in regards to the viruses that increasingly plague the Internet & e-mail today. The first step is to install good virus detection software on our own personal computers and then --- keep the "dat" or "signature" files updated monthly or semi-monthly with downloads from the virus software vendor's web site. The next obligation we have is not to "fall" for all the gimmicks and hoaxes that abound. We simply clog up the e-mail with needless junk when we forward hoax alerts (like the recent A.I.D.S. virus warning) through the systems we regularly use and depend on (like rootsweb). If in doubt whether something is real or if one needs more info, we should go to a reputable site like http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html and check out our fears before announcing them (and our ignorance) to the world.
