CAPTAIN JOHN ANDREW HUNTER -A highly honored life losed when Captain John A. Hunter calmly slept away at his home at Stormstown, Pa., On Thursday, March 2nd. Captain Hunter Was born at White Hall, near Pine Grove Mills, June 20th, 1820, and was the last survivor of ten, children, reaching the advanced age of almost ninety-six years. He came of military stock, his great grandfather, John Donaldson, as well as both his grandfathers, Andrew Hunter and Captain John McIlvain, being members of the Continental Army under General Washington, to whom Captain McIlvain was an adviser. His father, John Hunter, was a soldier of the American Army in the war of 1812, and being a millwright and worker in hard woods, was detailed to help build Perry's fleet on Lake Erie. His only brother, James Wallace Hunter, was a Captain in the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteers and fell in the Civil War. Captain Hunter gained his title by commanding several local companies in which many officers and 'men were prepared for service in the Civil War, although he himself never saw active service. In his early manhood, Captain Hunter taught for almost sixteen years in the public schools of Centre and Huntingdon Counties, beginning when about sixteen years of age. His interest in education was continued with the establishment of The Pennsylvania Sl! ate College, as evidenced by his presence at all its commencements until within the last two or three years, when failing strength prevented his attendance. In 1852, be was married to Miss Elizabeth B. Elder, of Halfmoon and since that time, for sixty-four years, has resided at the old Elder homestead. To Captain and Mrs. Hunter were born six children: Esther E., Mrs. Caroline Hunter Tudor, both of whom are deceased: Miss Anna Mary, at home; Dr. Wallace R. of Erie, Pa.; Prof. John A. Jr., of Boulder, Colorado, and Mrs. Susan Hunter Smith, of Blairsville, Pa. It is the lot of few men to occupy so high a position of honor and esteem among his fellow men as did Captain Hunter or to exercise such a beneficent influence in his community. His character was symmetrical, four-square in his integrity, lofty in his convictions, fearless and unflinching in adherence to them, kindly and considerate of others and of their opinions. His knowledge of men and events was so wide and covered such a range of years, his judgment was so just and reasonable and his personality was so pleasing that men delighted in the charm of his conversation and sought his advice and the benefit of his opinions. He was active in church life, being for many years, and until his death, a ruling elder in the Bald Eagle Presbyterian church, maintaining in his home a devout family religion. The funeral at eleven o'clock on Tuesday morning was attended by a large circle of neighbors and friends who gathered to pay a last tribute to a man who was loved by all. The services at the house were in charge of Rev. Walter Fay Carson and burial was made in the Friends burying ground in Halfmoon Township where his beloved wife was laid to rest seven years ago. -When Capt. JOHN A. HUNTER, of Stormstown, died surely Centre County's 'grand old man' passed away. He had lived ninety-six years and most of them were devoted to the development of a character that was remarkable for its amiable poise and steadiness in right living. --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Thank you all, for the good leads you've given me. Kate
Hi all, Tom HUNTER was apparently manager of the Dumfries & Galloway Standard Newspaper around the mid to late 1850's. His nephew, John BOWSER,b.1857, went from Australia, when quite young, to work for his uncle at the Newspaper. John returned to Australia in 1880. In 1884 he was editor and part owner with George MAXWELL, of the Wangaratta Chronicle. In 1894 he entered Parliament, became Premier of the State of Victoria in 1917, was knighted in 1927, and retired from politics in 1929. John BOWSER's father was John Henry BOWSER, (c.1822, Darlington, Durham) noted Indian Army Veteran. His mother was Marion, nee HUNTER,(c.1833, Dumfries, Scot.possibly Dalswinton, but not found in the Kirkmahoe PR) sister of Tom HUNTER. John Henry BOWSER & Marion HUNTER were married 1854? Dumfries(?) Other possible sister's for Marion are Janet, Margaret, Anne & Elizabeth who we think married James WIGHT? WHITE? WRIGHT? And another brother, John (c.1847) Other names possibly connected to HUNTER's are J.L.COSTIN, Louise COSTIN, John A. SLOAN, Chas. A. SLOAN, George A. SLOAN, John P. SLOAN, Henry SLOAN, Alan Douglas Stevenson SLOAN, Thomas BOYD, Herbert WELLS, George H. WELLS, John CORRIE???, jnr. I don't have any other information on these other people, except that I have a birthday book that we think was written by Marion BOWSER, nee HUNTER. Any connections? Please? Cathie Melbourne, OZ.

I have looked at maps of that area of Yancey and Rutherford Co.,NC. They are close to the borders of SC and GA. There is an area in the western part of NC that is bordered by GA. The SC line ends further east of there.
