Just an update on the Hunter book in the Mecklenburg co library, it is in very poor condition, and they would not let it be photocopied, also they said it does not mention William Hunter, of Buncombe Co, but does mention Humphrey Hunter, as I recall, he was of the same line, so if anyone gets to go there, there may be some useful info, i plan to go and get a look for myself , but it may take a few months to get there. The Sketches Of Western NC, does not have anything in it about Buncombe Co, as they tell me. I would still like to see both books for myself. Genie
Hello, I'm not researching the HUNTER name, but I came across this article and thought it might help someone to find a long lost relative. I don't have any more information than what is printed here. Linda Wood Parrish Rootsweb Sponsor from The Village Messenger, Fayetteville (Lincoln County), Tennessee, Vol. II, No. 10, May 12, 1824: NOTICE. On the 25th day of November, 1822. the body of a man was found in Cane creek, about four miles distant from the place at which it empties into Elk river. The person found was recognized by a number of individuals, to be a man who had been for several days previous, in Fayetteville and its vicinity. The circumstances which led to the search for and discovery of the body were these: A small grey nag was seen by the subscriber strolling near the bank of said creek—a pair of saddlebags were found at the place where the road leading from Fayetteville to Columbia crosses Cane creek, which immediately led to the suspicion that some person had been drowned in attempting to cross the creek. A number of the neighbors collected and after searching some time the body was discovered in the creek a short distance below where said road crosses the creek. A coroner’s inquest was holden over the body, who took a schedule of the property found about the deceased. He had in his pocket a gold watch, and in his saddlebags and pocket book a quantity of money in notes on a great variety of banks and other associations, together with a quantity of change tickets, amounting in all to about 3000 dollars. There were also in his saddlebags promissory notes upon different persons, amounting to about 500 dollars. There was likewise found in his saddlebags a quantity of s_____g silk and sewing needles. He had but a small quantity of clothing and that of inferior quality. There was found about him a certificate purporting to be signed by his father* & mother, setting forth the year in which the deceased was born, by which it appears he was, at the time of his death, about twenty-five years of age; also a number of letters were found about the deceased, addressed to Robert HUNTER at Pittsburg, by Sally HUNTER, Polly HUNTER, Robert HUNTER and Olive HUNTER, dated in the years 1818 and 1819 and post marked “Ira, Vermont.” The property found about the deceased is in the possession of the subscriber, living on Cane creek, Lincoln county, Tennessee. SAMUEL BUCHANAN May 10, 1824 *The surname of the father and mother in the certificate above mentioned was HUNTER, but their given names are not recollected, and the certificate having been deposited in the hands of a gentleman now absent, cannot be referred to.

Hello I am new to this list and only have 1 Hunter I am searching for I don't know much about her. And just recently found out her maiden name was hunter. In the 1920 census It has an Elisha Lawson that married a Lou. They were living in Lawton Oklahoma. My grandfather was born there in 1913. Along with all the other children. which Are As follows Paul Raymond Lawson B. 8/27/13 D- July 1972 Stanley J. B-july 1915 J. T. B- July 1917 Johnnie B- B-FEB1919 William B- 2/1/23 also names thrown in for kids are. Dolly, Nita, Maxine, and Faye I found out about Sarah and Elisha's Names. By sending off for My grandfathers original SS application. Who is Paul Raymond Lawson. But getting to her. Sarah Louise Hunter was born in 1889. that is a calculated guess from her age on the 1920 census. The census says that she was born in Missouri. And that her parents are also from there. If anyone can help thank you very much. Lisa Lawson Kimberlin

"The Hunter Family" by William May Hunter 1921 (out of print) There is a copy in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg NC Room that they may have photocopied and could do an interlibrary loan, etc. you can also refer to "Sketches of Western North Carolina" by Cyrus L. hunter (Humphrey Sr. son circa 1840-1850. It's also in the same library. There is a sketch of Humphrey Sr. as well as his brother Henry Hunter in it. Cheers! Hi Kelley, First, I haven't looked at those families for several years, but I suspect there may be a connection with the John Hunter who was in Augusta county VA in the 1740's. There were a number of Samuel Hunter's in that family. In case you aren't familiar I've appended the Judge Lyman Chalkley's Scots-Irish settlement of Virginia. This is an abstract of all the records in Augusta county up to about 1800. As you know, Augusta county included all of western Virginia at one time and all the way down to the NC line, west to the Mississippi. There was also an Andrew Hunter, Rev Soldied, in the SW Va area. He was there in the late 1700's. http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/ Hope this helps. Genie, This must be a different Dorcas Hunter. Mine was the daughter of John Hunter and married Stanhope W. Alexander in Mecklenburg Co., NC. Dorcas and Stanhope were my gr-gr-grandparents. Betty
I cannot recall what the original question was on Dorcas Hunter, but I had to go dig in my stored files to get the few pages of the book i had, it was Hutcheson and Allied Families, from the Chattanooga,TN public library. At any rate it says Dorcas Hunter was the Daughter of Samuel Hunter and Catherine Poteet, Dorcas was born April 19, 1830 in Buncombe Co, moved to Meigs Co, Tn with her parents when she was about 3 years old (1833) she married William Caswell Hutcheson on October 23, 1850, and died January 5, 1922 in Chattanooga, Tn. Dorcas was named for her maternal grandmother, Dorcas Henderson Poteet. Colonel James Poteet was the grandfather of Dorcas Hunter Hutcheson. Dorcas' father, Samuel HUnter was a brother to my great, great grandfather, Robert Hunter. so Dorcas would have been a first cousin, four times removed to me. Samuel and Robert Hunter were sons of William HUnter of Buncombe County, it also says in the book that WIlliam lived in Rutherford Co, NC before moving to Buncombe Co, if he did indeed move, as Buncombe County was formed in part from part of Rutherford County, NC, (I am embarrassed to say I forgot to give thought to that small detail.) There is also speculation in "the book" that Williams father was a Samuel HUnter, as a Samuel HUnter was on the tax list of Rutherford County in 1782.!!! Also states that William HUnter went over the mountains to Greene County, Tn to find Anne Caldwell, but I have checked this out, and there is not anything I could find in Greene County, Tn to prove this, (I wondered if she might have meant Greenville, SC ?) Or even Greene County, NC ? Oh, well. I only have a few pages of this book, but I hope this is helpful to someone. Genie
Thank you so much for the help. The link you gave was WONDERFUL! So much info makes me thankful for the Internet. Anyone with family in the VA, TN NC area should check out this site! Kelley R
can this book be bought ? if so where and how much I live in OK and they have next to nothing on NC here as my Hunters are in Yancy Co around 1875 they might be in that book as Buncombe Co. is real close Dianne
