    1. [HUNTER-L] HUNTER/JAGER
    2. Bill Hunter
    3. To help those who may have a problem identifying where their ancestors originated, the name Jager/Yeager is not only found in Germany and Switzerland, but is found, with slightly different spellings, in Czechoslovikia, Austria, Poland, Hungary, and in France as Chausseur (I Think). People from each of those countries, except possibly the French, adopted the English translation of their native name. A substantial number of the German Jager/Yeager families adopted the english translation of their Germanic name and became Hunters. This is particularly prevalent in those Yeager/Jager families that arrived before the Revolution. If you have a Pennsylvania, Virginia or NC Hunter who arrived before the Revolution there is some possibility you should be looking for a German ancestry. This is equally true of a number of other names. For instance, many with the name Zimmerman became Carpenter, Vogel became Bird, etc. For those descended from Charles Hunter who settled in Rowan county NC about 1756 there is record of a Charles Hunter arriving on a ship load of Germans sometime about 1754. He's called Charles Hunter on the ship passenger list. I have the date and ship name somewhere, but I'll let you descendants research it. It's more fun when you do it yourself. It is extremely unlikely an English/Scottish person would arrive on a ship load of Germans. It just did not work that way. Don't be fooled by the ship arriving from Cowles in Engand. English law required that all ships arriving in the American colonies could only originate in an English port, therefore the ships with German/Swiss passengers usually loaded and departed from Rotterdam, Holland and stopped at Cowles, England only long enough to pay the tax and get their papers stamped. This Charles Hunter possibly adopted the English translation of his Germanic name upon arrival. If this was my family I would pursue that possibility. A clue to his European origins may be found from the passengers who arrived on the ship with him. It was usual that a substantial number of people from a particular locale emigrated together and arrived on the same ship. Look for a Carl or Karl Jager back at the origins of these passengers. Hope this helps someone. Bill Hunter

    2. kathy hunter
    3. Sorry to miss lead you or any others out here. Kendall is on state highway 168, just W.NW. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This must be a very small town, cause it isn't in the list of the names of citys or town. But it does show the little town on the map " RAND McNALLY 2000 MILLENNIUM ATLAS", that i just purchased two nights ago. Once again, I'm Sorry! Sincerely Cliff Hunter II

    3. Nancy, I am descended from Johann Jaeger (German for Hunter) from Switzerland who changed his name to John Hunter. There are Germans, and let's not forget the English Hunters. 2. Just to stir up the pot...I met up with some nice British girls(ATS) at the Washington USOduring WW2..They said, when introductions were made "why, you're one of us" At the time I was pursuaded that I was Scotch-Irish and proceeded to tell them so.Their reply,"there's no such thing. The bloods won't match".They were partly right. However, with a scottish father and an irish mother, I feel that "scot-irish" is acceptable. 3. If at first you don't succeed.... =) Still looking for John HUNTER b. abt. 1828 in Scotland. (We believe his parents may be Robert HUNTER and Isobel KING. Three children are listed for these parents in the Old Monkland Parish Records: 1825 Anne; 1827 Robert; and 1828 John) John married--another, of course--Isabelle KING, dau. of John KING and Martha CRICHTON. They may have married in Ontario, or in Wayne Co. MI. We found John and wife Isabelle involved in land deals in Sanilac Co. MI in the 1850's-1860's and also found them in the 1860 and 1870 Census for Wayne Co., along with two sons, Robert (b. abt. 1854) and William (b. abt. 1858). John apparently died between 1870-1880, as in the 1880 census, Isabelle is married to Charles WELLINGTON, and William, as well as mother, Martha, are living with them. We believe they came from Scotland to Ontario, and then to Michigan, but other routes are possible. If you see a connection, please let me know! Thanks so much, Judy

    3. Penny, try the US Census'. They should give you all the clues you need for that period. Find French in 1910. It will give you his parent's ages and location of their birth. Using that go back to 1880 (maybe) and get George's parents. Any census from 1850 on will list all the family, their ages and birth locations (as well as lots of other useful information). The later the census, the more the information (as if the number of bathrooms were important). Jim Hunter, descended from John Hunter (Johann Jaeger) 1737 to 1823. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2000 2:48 AM Subject: Re: [HUNTER-L] Keating/HUNTER, Ireland>Toronto>PA. > Sorry, no.
