The latest I have for NY State is 1997 as follows: "State Office has records since 1880. For records before 1880 in any city except Buffalo, Albany and Yonkers, write to Registrar of Vital Stats in city where event occured." Lee, Death Certificates began in New York State 1880. There are Mortality Schedules going back to 1850.
