    1. [HUNT-L] Thanks Re: Ambrose HUNT, and wife Rachel
    2. Hello Cousins and Friends, I want to sincerely thank all those who took the time and effort to respond to my analogy re: baseball vs genealogy. There were so many of you, that I could not respond individually, but the appreciation is genuine nonetheless. I think the "gist" of most of those responses can be best summed up by those great, though blasphemous, lines from Porgy and Bess: The things that you're liable To find in the "Bible" They ain't necessarily so! I did get many, many useful suggestions, but the one that took my eye concerned Pittsylvania County. I knew that Pittsylvania County was formed out of Halifax County, but did not realize that the present county seat of Pittsylvania was once the seat of Halifax! And, perhaps, it is there that I should be concentrating my search. I also knew that my Hunts were located near the boundary of present day Halifax and Pittsylvania. Can't see the forest for the trees, eh? More on my Ambrose Hunt, whose wife was Rachel vs. Ambrose Hunt, whose wife was Rachel Reed: Per the IGI found at LDS Familysearch, Ambrose Hunt married Rachel Reed about 1789 in Greensburg, Green Co., KY. Per "Halifax County, Virginia Marriages 1753 - 1800," Knoor 1957, Ruth Hunt married John Crews 22 Dec 1789, daughter of Ambrose Hunt, who gives consent. I find it difficult to believe Ambrose could be giving consent for his daughter's Halifax Co. marriage, while he is in Green Co., KY getting married himself. My Ambrose Hunt does not sell all his property until 1795, then he does so through a power of attorney given to his brother, Joseph, while he is in Fayette Co., KY, near the end of Wilderness Road. Other land records found in Halifax Co. Deed Books are: Deed Book O Jan 4, 1777, Ambrose Hunt purchases about 100 acres from Samuel Morton and wife, Delphy. Deed Book 11 20 July 1778, Ambrose Hunt purchases 200 acres from Samuel Crawford. 13 Feb 1779, Ambrose Hunt purchases about 50 acres from William East. 14 Aug 1779, Ambrose Hunt sells about 100 acres to Joseph Hunt, his brother. Deed Book 12 24 Aug 1780, Ambrose Hunt sells about 280 acres to William Rowlet. 20 Sep 1781, Ambrose Hunt purchases about 400 acres from Benjamin Vaughn, for 5000 pounds, an enormous sum of money in those days. 16 Oct 1783, Ambrose Hunt purchases about 390 acres from Shadrack East. Deed Book 13 18 Aug 1785, Ambrose Hunt sells 50 acres to Drury Kersey. 19 Oct 1786, Ambrose Hunt sells 100 acres to Andrew McGinness (Mac Ginnes). Deed Book 14 19 Dec 1787, Ambrose Hunt sells about 100 acres to Reuben Hunt. So, you see, Ambrose had started do dispose of his property by the later half of the 1780s. However, he still owned considerable property in Halifax County. Now, I must say, that I AM aware of two OTHER Ambrose Hunts; one from the New England or Long Island lines of Hunts, can't remember which; and another Ambrose Hunt, in Kentucky, believe it or not, who obtained a land grant of 50 acres in 1834 in what is now Butler County, KY. He has no connection, as far as I know, to my Hunts. This Ambrose married a Nancy Oller 11 Jan 1829 in Edmonson County, which is adjacent to Butler. Perhaps, just perhaps, this is the one that married Rachel Reed in 1789, as he was passing through Green County. This could be further supported by the fact that Green River, which flows through Greensburg, also flows through both Edmonson and Butler Counties of Kentucky, and was a favorite route to the west. Again, thanks to everyone who responded to my query. My apologies if I have bored you with all this. I did not intend to write a book when I started.......... Regards to All, M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY
