Answering Larry Hunts question to me, has turned into a book--I think it has ineresting enough. genealogical overtones that everyone might like to read it. Do you mean where can you get a death certificate or who does the paperwork on the original death certificate?. Original is done by the military HQ for whom you work or if an Embassy or other entity a consular officer may do it. As per usual the "informant " is key to the information on the certificate. It may be true, believed, a best guess or completely phony cover-up. If its a cover-up then the name of the informant may be forged also.. The informant's name, residence and relationship, if any, should be helpful. If you mean where can you get a copy depends on the date. For all military go to National Archives for info. They will probably prescribe a FORM or mail you one. If you are to get a death certificate you may as well ask for complete service record. The military may be sensative re showing causes of death in death certificates......because of security, the possible effect on live relatives and/or a bad reflection on the military service. Everyone looks after #1!. If she/he committed suicide or any other dumb mistake that took his/her life the death certificate will probably read "due to enemy action", "pilot error" etc without details. However the details MAY be in the person's service record. If really sensitive you may never find out. May have been a spy behind enemy lines, a Marine guard at an Embassy on an internationally sensative issue, or really a CIA operative. There are a some CIA persons in military uiniforms in various ranks and jobs. You will seldom, (not never), find out about these people unless you are in the intelligence or cryptography business (at the right place at the right time). This is the way it should be. The death certificate may be as phony as a three dollar bill(US), which fortunately, is the exception and not the rule... http://www.nara.gov/regionals/stlouis.html if that doesn't work just go with www.nara.gov.
