Allen, Ancestry is a subscription site, but their 'contributed' databases, contributed family trees (WorldConnect) & some other contributed items are all available to anyone for free anytime. I subscribe to Ancestry U.S. Records, and for less than $200/year get an incredible value for my money. Ancestry also owns Rootsweb & provides the funding for the many, many free websites and mailing lists (like the Hunt-L) that are hosted on their servers. Ancestry seems to be the Walmart of the genealogy world ..... getting a bum rap when they don't deserve it. They are far from perfect, but then how many companies are? If I remember correctly, you can not get into the databases unless you pay a monthly fee. Is that still correct? If it is, this is why I never gave my database to them. I do not like the idea of a web site company gathering all this data, and then charging people to look at it. If I am wrong, please straighten me out. Thanks in advance. Sharyl, This is sandshunt (Hunt here) writing. I, Susan, did not mean to complain at all. Ancestry.com and the others put in a lot of time and effort to gather all of the databases. I am so glad Ancestry.com and the allied sites are available. Their approach is very organized and so user-friendly. They are adding new data all the time. We did not mean to offend anybody. I am very grateful that Ancestry.com is there and allows Steve and me to pay for access. I have found all kinds of answers to our family history questions on their various databases, thanks to the hard work of others at Ancestry.com and to the posting of so many resources in the various categories. My own attitude is that the point of family research and the "fun" is to share with everyone whatever new information I was able to find. If someone else puts whatever I may have contributed on their database and charges for it, it does not matter to me. At least it is in one place and part of an index that is easy for anyone to use. But, that is MY choice. If I wanted to profit financially from research or to not allow others to do so, I would copyright and publish myself. It is a free country and thank goodness we do have a choice here and there. So, thank you, Ancestry.com and all of the MyFamily sites!! Enough of this, and I apologize if I stirred up unnecessary controversy. And now, back to the Hunt quest. Best wishes Sharyl Ferrall <ferrall@mtaonline.net> wrote: Allen, Ancestry is a subscription site, but their 'contributed' databases, contributed family trees (WorldConnect) & some other contributed items are all available to anyone for free anytime.
