In July 2000 I posted the following message to this list: _________________________ I have an original 'New York American' dated 10-7-1837 which contains a lengthly article consisting of a long letter from General Memucan Hunt, Texan Envoy; the answer of Sect'y Forsyth and the reply of Mr. Hunt. The beginning of the article from this newspaper reads as follows: "The proposition to Annex Texas to the United States has been rejected! We rejoice at it sincerely, and offer our thanks, heartily though humbly to the President, for having so definitively and promptly refused, even to entertain the proposition for future consideration. The National Intelligencer of yesterday, furnished us with the annexed extracts from the correspondence submitted to the US House of Representatives, in obedience to the call of J.Q. Adams." The newspaper is fragile, so I have not attempted to transcribe the lengthly article. If anyone is interested, I will scan it for you. __________________________ Following my post to the list, I received nearly a dozen requests for the scanned article and an offer from Doug Hunt to post it. In a follow-up message to this list, I wrote: The entire article has now been posted on the Hunt-List archives by Doug Hunt. Thank-you Doug!! The URL's are: http://genweb.net/~hunt/archive/bios/NYA1837A.gif and http://genweb.net/~hunt/archive/bios/NYA1837B.gif Unfortunately Doug's web-pages no longer exist & I'm unable to find the scans on the Hunt-L archives & I no longer have the scanned images on my computer. I've received another request and would like to send her the images. I'm hoping that someone on this list requested copies from me at the time of my original offer & still has them. Thank-you very much, Sharyl Ferrall -Chickaloon, Alaska-
