I have tried to tie my Thomas Hunt to the Granville County Hunts, but I can't find any link other than timing and naming patterns. I do know that the Thomas Hunt in Rutherford County deeds in the late 1700's is supposed to be a Thomas of Granville County, but I don't have the evidence for that. There is no evidence that my Thomas (b. 1787) is related to that Thomas. Also, there was a Madison (or Matterson or Medder or Meddert) Hunt in Rutherford -Lincoln counties deeds of that era and my Thomas named a son Madison. (I believe that the Madison-Matterson-Medder Hunt might have been a loyalist in the Revolution and went out of the country after the war.) Other Rutherford County Hunts of the late 18th and early 19th centuries have much the same naming patterns as the Granville County Hunts, and other researchers in Rutherford seem to think they are descended from John Hunt and Mary Tyas/Tyus of Virginia and then North Carolina. My Thomas was in close proximity to other Rutherford Hunts, but we have no direct evidence of relationship. However, the other Rutherford Hunts had very close ties to the Taylor families of Rutherford County (who I guess could possibly be tied to the Granville County Taylors). It's all of these things that make me hope that some day I will find the thread that puts this all together. Deason Hunt http://hollytalk.com
I was interested in you early on cause of what you mentioned about your possible Hunt line at Ancestry so I went digging around to see if I could help you go back further. It was really difficult looking at Census as there was a ton of Thomas Hunt in Rutherford and other counties. I was trying to find out stuff about Guilford County, Hunt also yet noone seem to know where Lydia Mendenhall and James Hunt went that listed in Guilford County, Court Papers in 1829, This coincide with my Lydia Hunt 2nd oldest child born in 1829. Deason - I, too, am researching Rutherford County, Tennessee Hunts. I have a Jeremiah Hunt, b. November 1803 Virginia, married 29 Jan 1829 to Sarah "Sallie" Sloan Taylor, b. ca. 1812 Virginia. As far as I can find, they both died after 1854 in Rutherford County, TN, but I haven't found anything as of yet on their deaths. I was not able to find them on the 1860 Census, unless I just missed them somewhere, in fact, I haven't found them after 1850 at all. I found Jeremiah in 1830 Census for Rutherford County, TN and in 1850 Rutherford County, TN. Your comments below caught my eye because you were talking about the Rutherford County Hunts and Taylors. Jeremiah and Sallie's children were named Martha Ann, John Pinkney, Nancy G., Mary Susan, Francis Eliza, Sarah Elizabeth, Simon, Samuel G., James W., Benjamin M., Thomas J., William J. Do these names also fall under the naming pattern you mentioned? I've been trying to find Jeremiah's parents and siblings, and also Sallie Taylor's parents and sibling, too. You may have given me some place to look, but thought I'd try you to see if this family of Hunt's could fit in somewhere with yours, especially since Jeremiah Hunt married Sallie Taylor. You had mentioned a possible close relationship between the Rutherford County Hunts and Taylors. I know that the above may be a little jumbled and not make much sense, but I'm kind of doing this on the fly. Deason, have you delved into the New Garden MM in Guilford Co. NC? There is much about them, family wise, in Hinshaw's Encyclopedia, American Quaker Genealogy. They were originally in Rowan County which was huge and it was divided into many counties incl. Guilford; and also Burke which was a parent county of Rutherford. Thomas is one of the names I remember among those Quaker clans, but it has been many years since I read through all the sections! Was your Thomas ever described somewhere or other as having one or two brothers... by name? It sort of rings a bell with me according to what you've written.
