I don't know about anyone else, but I always thought the Hunt name was simple, and its derivation obvious. Wrong! I ran across a Hunt family I thought might be related. Turns out they weren't, and weren't even Hunts until the US Civil War. Their first US ancestor came to Pennsylvania from Switzerland, named Viesenard. That quickly became Wiesenhunt, and finally was shortened by a grandfather to Hunt when he enlisted in the Confederate Army. I guess the lesson here is: Don't make assumptions!
