I have been looking closely at the 1790 census records for a long time now trying to find clues to Archibald Hunt b:abt 1789 NC. I suspected he was born in Chathum since that is where he bought his first piece of land in 1807 at the age of 18 for 50 pounds. He first shows up on the 1810 in Chathum as well so I was being led to Chathum Co. But yet none of the census indexes showed a Hunt in Chathum Co in 1790 and only 1 in 1810, Archibald Hunt. I was looking more closely at Samuel Gilmore census records (father in law of Archibald Hunt) when I looked a few names down from him and was amazed!. There were TWO UNCOUNTED HUNTS! The writing is not that bad but it is a bit sloppy. I compared the letters to others on the same page to make sure I was right. Sure enough I was! Down to the style of writing for all of it. It was my best weapon that I have used many times before. There are only seven families that have a surname that starts with the letter H in this census in this county and they are all in alphabetical order. The last two H names can be mistaken for Hart but that wouldn't make any sense since those two names should have been at the top of the H list by alphabetical rules. I believe that they were mis-transcribed. One of the two name clearly has a Hu and the name under it resembles Ha, not any sense there. So I believe that these are the correct transcriptions for ... 1790 North Carolina CHATHAM HILLSBOROUGH DIST Series: M637 Roll: 7 Page: 207 John Hunt 1 0 0 0 0 Wm Hunt 2 4 3 0 0 For those researching Archibald Hunt here is a new theory. Remember just a theory! In 1807 Archibald Hunt bought 50 acres for 50 pounds in Chathum Co from James Demare. That is a lot of money back then for one so young. And even it was saved that is still a large amount of money for one so young. So I think that is was an inheritance money. This deed record states "...sixty poles to a sassafras in said branch thence south in such a course as to include the Houses of said Hunt at the field at the mouth of rocky river..." Now how many 18 year olds does anyone know who has "Houses" and 50 pounds to spend on extra land???? Not to mention that in 1810 Archibald Hunt was the ONLY HUNT IN CHATHUM CO. Which means that this William Hunt (who fits the age ranges to be the father of Archibald) was his father then he must of have died before 1810 and this was all inheritance. I did notice a William Hunt and John Hunt both had wills in the year 1807 in NC in an index book but I will have to send off for the records. Anyone else care to add to this new theory? Tara
