DANIEL, JOHN, RALPH HUNT Wilson, Re: Your below questions are interlined. Some notes on Gershams: The old Gersham, brother to Dr. Daniel, was referred to in the records of Rowan County as Gersham Hunt SR when the next youngest Gersham attained 21. He died in Rowan Co and left a will. The second oldest Gersham, the son of Dr. Daniel, was referred to as Gersham JR upon attaining 21. His death location and date are unknown to me. The third oldest Gersham, the son of Gersham SR, was referred to as Gersham upon attaining 21, with no suffix. Believe he remained in Rowan County, but I would have to recheck this. By the 1800 census, we have Gersham SR, Gersham JR and Gersham on it. Gersham JR moved on in 1804. John, oldest son of Dr. Daniel Hunt, had a son Gersham, who doesn't appear to be on any (or many) records in Rowan and moves to Kentucky with his father. His family is there. I'm not sure where or when he died as I have not followed John's family in KY that much. I known John ended up in Missouri, so perhaps this is the Gersham in Saline? Other listers -- any inputs on this? Col. Jonathan, brother of Dr. Daniel, had a son Gersham, who appears on some few records in Rowan, but is distinguishable by his location over in the Yadkin area with his brothers and Jonathan's widow. This Gersham left in the 1790's for Williamson Co, TN. He died there & his estate records are in Williamson County. DANIEL, JOHN, RALPH HUNT I have been trying to decipher a e-mail posted by Mr. Kenneth Shelton and a reply by Mr. Sandy Hunt Lubbock sometime around Feb. 21. Linage: John, Gershom, Dr. Daniel, John, Raph *** This is postulated -- it is proven from Gersham JR to Dr. Daniel, etc., and it is postuated that John Hunt is a son of Gersham JR **** John Hunt b July 13, 1798 Rowan Ncar. d Apr 29, 1884 Crittendon, Ky. Married Elizabeth Allen bef 1821. Also married Sarah Paris 7 June 1866 Critendon Ky. Her father was Obadiah Paris Mother Patsey Ollison. *** This is correct w/minor change -- mother is Martha "Patsy" Ellison *** I have the following: Gershom, Dr. Daniel, John, Ralph Gershom born 1752 Rowan Ncar. d. Feb 1827 Saline Missouri married Elizabeth 30 may 1801 Rowan Ncar. Children Susanna Hunt who married John Deadman, Anna Hunt who married John Wiseman abt 1780 Rowan and d 25 Jul 1842 Sumner Tn. *** Gersham Hunt JR was born in the early 1750's, so 1752 is approximately correct, although I am not aware of any contemporary record that establishes the year as exactly 1752. He is at least 16 in 1772 as he makes the tax list. He is listed under his father Daniel, so he is 16-21 years old (b. 1751-1756). I am not aware of anyone who has established the death date or place of Gersham JR. Where did you find this Feb 1827 in Saline MO reference? Also, the marriage date is from an unfamiliar source -- and 1801 is definitely too late to account for his children, so I'm not sure what this is suppose to mean. Also, how would you get a date & a first name for the wife, but no last name? The two children listed are his children based on contemporary records. *** Obadiah Paris Married Martha Ellison and had a child named Mary Paris who married John Hunt Jr. b 1 Nov. 1821 Smith Tn. d 24 may 1895 Crittenden Ky. they had 11 children. John Hunt Jr. father was Abel C. Hunt b abt 1795 Wilson, Tn. Married Elizabeth F. Bell 5 sep 1816. *** This is correct for the most part, but Abel C. Hunt was born 1784 in North Carolina, believed to be Rowan County. His age is consistent in all the census records and it specifically stated in his estate records. Married Elizabeth F. Bell, which was recorded in Wilson Co TN but Abel lived on Brush Creek, Smith Co TN. It is believed that Abel C. Hunt and John Hunt SR were brothers, although 14 years separate them. John Hunt SR lived on Brush Creek with Abel C. at the same time in the 1810's as did Gersham Hunt JR. *** Abel C. Hunt dad was Abel Hunt b abt 1765 Rowan Nc. d oct 1842 Barren Ky married Duanna (susanna) Beard so may linage looks like this: John Hunt Jr., Abel C., Abel, Dr. Daniel, John, John, Ralph *** No, Abel C. Hunt was not the son of Abel Hunt. Abel Hunt's family is below. It is proven that Abel had a son Daniel Hunt. It is believed that that Daniel was Daniel Durham Hunt as listed below. I feel I have about 80% certainty of it being so, but I lack that one final document that conclusively ties Daniel Durham Hunt as the Daniel, son of Abel Hunt. It is proven, though, that Abel C. Hunt and Daniel Durham Hunt were cousins based on contemporary evidence.: Descendants of Abel Hunt (the older Abel Hunt, son of Dr. Daniel and brother to Gersham JR) Generation No. 1 1. ABEL5 HUNT (DANIEL4, JOHN3, JOHN2, RALPH1) was born Abt. 1764 in Rowan Co, North Carolina, and died Aft. 18 November 1833. He married (1) JOANNAH / DUANNAH BAIRD 17 February 1787 in Rowan Co, North Carolina, daughter of ANDREW BAIRD and UNKNOWN UNKNOWN. She was born Bef. 1770 in Rowan Co, NC, and died Bet. 1810 - 1811 in Rowan Co, NC. He married (2) ELIZABETH UNKNOWN Bet. 1800 - 1810 in Rowan Co, North Carolina. She was born Abt. 1790 in North Carolina. Notes for ABEL HUNT: Jonathan Hunt was a Revolutionary War Pensioner from Barren Co, KY. Filed in 1830's. Brother Abel Hunt filed affidavit from Barren Co, KY as well. Abel states he was not in the service himself, but was about 16 years old at the time of Jonathan's service and was 69 years old at the time (18 Nov 1833). This agrees with Jonathan's estimate that his service occurred around 1780. Jonathan states he was living at his father Daniel Hunt's during the Revolutionary War in Rowan Co, NC and was born in Rowan Co (around 1760 per his age given). By 7 Nov 1843, he was in Morgan Co, Missouri and states that many of his children had moved from KY to MO. 2nd wife is on the 1850 Calloway Co, KY census living with son Alemath Hunt & next to son Wilson Hunt. She is still alive & on the 1860 Calloway Co, KY census as well. 1860 : Elizabeth Hunt p.332, Juliann Hunt p. 242, William M. Hunt p. 381, Wilson Hunt p.241, Wilson M. Hunt p.332. The marriage record states Abel Hunt & Joannah / Duanna Beard, but her age is such that she would have to be from Andrew's first marriage. Had a son Daniel Hunt, but it is inconclusive that it is Daniel Durham Hunt of Utah. It appears that this may be so, but more work remains to verify this. A series of deeds were executed before & shortly after his death divising his land among his children in Barren Co, KY. He married (1) NANCY DAVIS Abt. 1827 in Smith Co, TN. He married (2) SUSAN DAVIS Bet. 1843 - 1849. He married (3) MARTHA EYNON Bet. 1848 - 1851 in Deseret, Salt Lake City, UT. He married (4) MARY JANE BIGELOW 1859 in Deseret, Salt Lake City, UT. Notes for DANIEL DURHAM(?) HUNT: Nahum (Bigalow) found measures to accompany this grand love and arriving at the halting place, soon built a comfortable house for his family. It was there that Brigham Young, already with a number of wives, married with little courting the eldest girl of Nahum, Mary Jane, and also with no courting whatever the second girl, Lucy As before stated, the pioneers came out in 1847. The next summer or spring, as President Young had returned for more of the Saints, he asked to take Lucy to the West. She was allowed to go. The year 1850 saw Nahum being assisted some by the Church with his familyalso one or two others, poor and homeless, who seemed thrown on his kindnessen route to the valley. Always charitable, he was generally burdened with some one or two heartsick or poor, who gladly accepted the charity of the family. Arriving in Salt Lake Valley in the fall of 1848 he was advised by President Young to spend the winter in a little town (or rather the nucleus of a town) a few miles north of the city. Accordingly to Farmington went Nahum and family. Mary and Lucy, of course, remained in their husbands family in Salt Lake City. Nahums Children THE family have grown up and married and reared other families who likewise are nearly all grown up and married, reared and settled in life. Mary Jane left the family of President Young and married again [Horace Roberts in 1852, John Bair in 1856, Daniel Durham Hunt in 1859, and Philander Bell in 1868], had only one child born after she was forty years old, leaving by her death an orphan at six months of age. The little one soon followed. Delicate in health, quiet, patient, yet sometimes with a rare quick impulsiveness of action that generally gave after pain, Mary Jane was truly a good, kind, and patient woman. Hirum married Martha Mecham at Provo (where the widow moved and settled after her loss) and lived at that place for a number of years. Called by the Church to move to Dixie, he complied, and in the course of a few years moved to Arizona where he now resides. He reared a very large and creditable family of children; most of them are married and living in Arizona. Lucy, married to Brigham Young, has always been a true and loving wife, a most fond and devoted mother, and above all a fervent follower of her Saviors cause and kingdom. She has strength and character that finds itself unmoved under the most trying circumstance. With the courage and fearlessness of her father, she still possesses more than the sensitive delicacy of her mothers character. To her husband she was, according to his own testimony, A wife indeedtrue, chaste, loving, and in all things seeking to please her husband. To her children she is all and more than mothers are to childrenwithhold a tender enemy, a fond friend, and a most prayerful, earnest seeker after truth wherever it is to be found.
