At the age of 74, he volunteered for the Revolutionary Army with his grandson, John Wimbish. He was a Pres- byterian, and his funeral was preached by Dr. Archibald Alexander, who wrote of Mr. Hunt (see The Life of Archibald Alexander, D.D. PP. 137-) He was the father of Rev. James Hunt of Montgomery Co., Maryland. James Hunt had land deeded from King George II in Halifax Co., Virginia in 1761. He en- listed in Captain Thomas Tweatt's Co. of the 14th Va. Regt., as a Corporal. This regt. commanded by Col. Charles Lewis. He was promoted to Sergeant Major and in early Spring of 1779, he became a member of the 10th Va. Regt. His name is found last on the muster roll the 9th of Dec. 1779. He left a will in Charlotte Co., Va. Pittsylvania Co., Va. history says: "James & Ralph (?) of Hanover, Va., in 1746 bought land in Lunenburg Co., Va. There James Hunt reared a large family (m. Sarah Whitlock) leaving 7 sons. "He died at his home on the Staunton River". "Patrick Henry attended his funeral." His home was near Patrick Henry's home, "Red Hill" in Charlotte Co., Va. Andrea I, pg. 23 states "his family came from Virginia to N.C. and on into Spartenburg, S. Carolina. WIFE NOTES: Sarah WHITLOCK General: Sarah was the daughter of James and Frances Whitlock. CHILD NOTES: Charles HUNT General: See S.C. file: "Ancestral Home of the Hunt Family of South Carolina" "This plantation had been in the same family approximately 200 years when this marker was erected in 1965. It was a grant to Charles Hunt when he migrated to South Carolina from Virginia in 1770 and included all that land lying between Coneross and Little Beaverdam Creeks. Son of Sgt. Major James Hunt of Hanover Co., Va., Charles Hunt erected his home across the highway from the present home of William C. Hunt, his great-great grandson. " A half-mile East lies the original family cemetery which includes the grave and marker to Dick, forman of slaves." CHILD NOTES: James HUNT Rev. General: Rev. Hunt was a prominent Presbyterian minister of his day. He kept a school in Montgomery Co., Maryland, at his place called "Tusculum." He was a graduate of Princeton and was a Presbyterian clergyman, having charge of a church near Rockville from 1761 to the time of his death June 2, 1793. His will was dated Dec. 19, 1785 and was proved Dec. 28, 1795. See Wm. & Mary Quarterly, Series I, Vol. 22, pg 138-139. CHILD NOTES: Elijah HUNT General: Was a Justice of the Peace in Halifax Co., Va. 1776-1777. See D.A.R. Vol. 134, p. 263. Left will dated 7 Dec. 1793 in Halifax Co., Va. CHILD NOTES: Sarah HUNT General: Married (1) James Wimbish, (2) William Craghead. Her father James calls her Sarah Craghead (James Wimbish had died) in his will and leaves her negroes: Hannah, Gabriel and Jacob, as well as a featherbed and furniture. CHILD NOTES: Nathaniel HUNT General: Five children of Nathaniel are named in their Grandfather Jame's Will (18 Oct. 1794, Charlotte Co., Va. Cornwall Parish) Date of Nathaniel's Will was 1795, according to CHM. CHILD NOTES: David HUNT General: See Will Pr. 26 March 1826. (In folder Misc. wills by Andrea). Was Capt. of Pittsylvania Co. Militia, 1785. Inscription on his tombstone reads: "Soldier of the Revolution". His father, James, left him a featherbed and five negroes: Abby, Braddock, London, Ralph and Squire, in his will. This was on the condition that David pay to "my grandson John, son of John, 25 lbs. current Virginia money when the said John arives at lawful age or marries". CHILD NOTES: John HUNT CHILD NOTES: Gilbert HUNT General: 1000 acres ("homplace") in Charlotte Co. left to Gilbert by his father, James. He was on the tax list in 1782 in Pittsylvania Co., but he died in Charlotte Co. James stipulates that Gilbert is to pay John, "son of my son John" fifty pounds when he arrives at legal age. IGI states that Christopher is named in the will of Gilbert Hunt "1 Dec. 1798".
