Merriam-Webster. Not sure if those meanings are in order of useage, length of time documented, or what. But in the context of what was asked, spouse is the answer - not gender-specific. Remember: Prince Albert was the consort of Queen Victoria - I think she chose this term for him when her parliament would not give him the higher rank she thot appropriate. I'd recommend to all - bookmark a dictionary on your server or elsewhere - I have Merriam-Webster and the Oxford Dict at the ready to answer these questions - both provide excellent coverage of even the most abstruse words. (I also have a thesarus bookmarked - and a biographical dictionary.) These are good helps which may reduce the need for questions about definition on the lists, just as the map and gazetteer sites do for location.
