Since my first posting on the 12th inst. concerning the Hunts of Erie county, PA, I have been asked about other Hunt families within the county other than my own Henry Hunt family. As nearly as I can tell, there were at least four Hunt family lines in Erie county as of the early- to-mid 1800s. (Note: I suspect that two of the family lines may be related -- paragraphs 2 and 3 -- but I have not yet found a connection.) 1. George Hunt and Henry Hunt (presumed to be brothers, but not certain) in North East township. This township, obviously, is in the most extreme northeast part of Erie county. George and Henry both came from New Jersey and settled in this place about 1797. They used to go to Pittsburgh to mill. George was the first Justice of the Peace in Erie county. Henry was Erie county's first sheriff. These two Hunts appear to be the first Hunts in Erie county. I know nothing more than this regarding these two Hunts. 2. Henry Hunt (ca. 1807-1875) of Belle Valley, in Mill Creek township. This township is in the north-central part of Erie county. Mill Creek township lies to the west and south of the City of Erie. Belle Valley is in the most eastern part of the township, immediately below the southeast part of Erie city. This is the Hunt family of which I descend. Henry Hunt was born in England (I don't know where in England), and came to America as a young boy with his parents. An old passed-down story in my family says this Hunt family immigrated about 1816, but I have not yet been able to document this. I do not even know who Henry Hunt's parents are (can anyone help me with this?). It is said that this family lived in New York for awhile. Henry Hunt married Mary Simons (or Symonds-?), supposedly in New York. Henry and Mary Simons Hunt came to Erie county about 1829. Henry lived out the remainder of his life here. 3. John Hunt (1812-1860) of the City of Erie. The city of Erie is in the most north-central part of the county. John was married to Adelia D. Otis, and together they had six known children. John Hunt is thought to be a younger brother of Henry Hunt (paragraph 2 above), but I have not yet found proof certain. If true, the same immigration data found in no. 2 above would also apply to this Hunt family. 4. Simeon Hunt (1785-1874) of Waterford borough. The borough of Waterford is located in the south-central part of Erie county. Simeon was born in Sharon, CT, and is a descendant of old New England stock. It is said that this Hunt family left Connecticut and first settled in Vermont for a short time, then relocated to Erie county, PA. Simeon came to Waterford about 1814 to 1816, and remained there until his death. I have next to nothing on this family, but I know that much as been recorded about Simeon and his children, as Simeon was a very well-to-do person. Probably there are other list members who know a lot about this family. I do know that this family is definitely not related to the Henry Hunt family (paragraph 2), and probably not related to the Hunts of paragraph 1 or 3, unless the connection is way, way back in England. This is the best information I have. If anyone knows of any additional information, or any errors in what I have written here, please let me know. Don Nutt Adrian, MI.
