    3. Help ! I'm trying to trace the parents of my GG Grandfather, Joseph Henry Blaire Hunt. Joseph was the subject of a murder trial which attracted much public interest in the UK in 1823/4. (The trial of Thurtell and Hunt for the murder of William Weare). Copious volumes have been written about the trial, but not one clue as to his parents. I know that his death sentence was commuted to life transportation, and that he arrived in NSW in July 1824 on board the Countess of Harcourt. He was sent to Bathurst, where he eventually married Mary Rogers, had children Joseph Henry and Angela, and died in 1861. Prior to his arrival in the colonies, however, I have few clues as to his parentage. I gather he was born in Hertfordshire or London c. 1793/4. He was married (possibly to Mary Notlage, 1813), and was living with his wife in Golden Square at the time of the crime. In the trial, there is mention of him holding the Army and Navy Coffee House in St Martin's Lane; of his previously being an innkeeper; and of prior sentences in Newgate Prison and Fleet prison. I gather his family had disowned him. There is also mention of a brother, who was a singer at Covent Garden. Hunt himself, in one publication, was listed as a professional singer. Any help to unravel this mystery would be most appreciated. Lesley Chaplin YASS NSW
