    1. Re: [HUNT-L] John Hunt
    2. SANFORD B HUNT
    3. As requested: History records John HUNT as the founder of Huntsville, but tells very little about h im. Col. Ed Betts in his "History of Huntsville says that John Hunt came from Franklin County, TN, and returned thither to Salem on Bean's Creekl, after spending a comparitively few years in Madison County AL. >From recently discovered letters dated 1835 and 1839 it would appear than John Hunt had a brother, David Hunt who lived near Salem, Franklin County, TN and several children who emigrated to Polk County MO. Apparently John Hunt went to Marion County, GA and settled near Tazewell as indicated in a letter he wrote dated "Near Tazewell,June 19th 1835". . High points of the letter: "I have had two letters from my children that have gone to Missouri" " I intend going there in April next to see the country. I cannot go any sooner on the account of my business as sheriff." " I have served as sheriff eighteen years come March next and I think it is time to quit....." A second letter addressed to David Hunt Esqr, Franklin County, near Salem Beans Creek. Evidently John Hunt did go to MO to see his children. His letter to David Jan 20th 1839 has following salient points: "Dear and Respected brother." "I have delayed answering (your last letter) untuil the present on account of the Mormon War in this state." "Your letter brought melancholy news of the death of our brother, George". (Five pargraaphs about the Mormon war) "Rhody wishes to know if brother George died in his senses. ....She sends her love......" This letter was mailed in Bolivar, MO Jan 22, 1839. and addressed as follows,"Mr. David Hunt, Franklin County, Salem postoffice, Tennessee." The foregoing was fouind in the HUNTSVILLE Public Library. I also have a two page detailed sketch of the life of John and his sons Dr. Alexander Hunt and Daniel Hunt of Butler County. All very interesting but only as good as the author (unknown and deceased). The 1820 TN census shows JOhn in Franklin County, David in Franklin County and a Daniel in Lawrence Co TN. S3 in Lubbock TX
