    3. Marsha, You may or may not recall, but I e-mailed you once about one of the elephants that the Hunt show had -- Chandra. I inquired if the animal was a male because of the rather long tusks she had, but you advised me that no, she was not a male -- just a female with long tusks(tushes). Incidentally I have the two tape video set of the Hunt show that Jim Ridenour and you did a few years ago. I have always had a certain fondness for your family's circus in part because of the name (Hunt) being the same as my mother's maiden name, and also because The Story of Mr. Circus by your grandfather, my first copy of which I bought when I saw the Hunt Bros. Royal International Circus in 1962 at, I want to say if my memory is correct, District Heights, Maryland, near where my family was living at the time. I have to say that book is my all time favorite circus book, and I have probably read it at least 5 times by now. I think my mother always had a soft spot for your show because of the name -- she took us to it when I was a wee lad (have no memory of that visit) and she was impressed with how clean and neat things were on the lot. As for the e-mail address, yes, I spent 20 years in the circus business, starting out in 1976 with Big John Strong's circus, and over the years toured with his show, Martin & Downs, Kelly Miller, the RBBB Gold Unit in Japan (first year) and finally spending 10 years with Roberts Bros. Circus before retiring from the road at the conclusion of the 1995 season. I was not born to the business, but came in when I was 28. Did just about everything but own a circus -- performed, announced, trained animals, assisted my wife during her aerial acts (single trap, web), did advance, shoveled a lot of elephant, horse and other assorted animal dung, pounded stakes with a 16 lb hammer, drove show trucks, etc. -- in short, made myself generally useful. Those 20 years I wouldn't have traded for a million dollars. It saddens me now to see that there are so few shows left like those you and I spent time with. It all seems to be going the way of the Cirque du Soleil operations -- which aren't circus to me. It makes me glad that I decide to hit the spangled road while I was a young man instead of working 30 years at some job I didn't care about, and then go "play" circus as a retiree like some fans do. Hope that answers your question!
