My maternal great grandfather was named George E.P. Hunt and he was born in Massachusetts in 1840 or 1841. He apparently moved to the San Francisco Bay area and married Nancy Brown. This union produced 2 or 3 sons, one of them being William Edwin Hunt, my grandfather. George E.P. Hunt was a boat builder and captain of a small steamship, the Harriet, which probably operated between SF and Sacramento. He later divorced Nancy and married a woman named Cutler in the 1880s. His name appears on the federal censuses in the late 1800s along with the names of his sons. My late mother told me that he was not well thought of by the family and that he was rough on his sons, which led William to head out on his own as soon as he could. He headed north to Oregon and later homesteaded there along with his wife, Rojinia Campbell Hunt, in Wasco County, where they ran bands of sheep and built up a ranch that grew to nearly 20,000 acres before he died in the late 1930s. No one seems to know what the initials E.P. stood for. My mother said everyone in the family speculated that it was something like Ephraim Phineas something like that. I wonder if the "E" might have been Ebenezer. I have not been able to find anything about his Massachusetts beginnings -- ie, where he was born (town), who his parents were, or anything else about that phase of his life. I don't even know when he died -- he had a boat building business in SF and may have been a victim of the Great Earthquake there in 1906, I believe it was. I was wondering if any on the Hunt family web site might help me out with this. Thanks. William H. Thank you. I appreciate it. I sure hope it helps to fill in the gaps in the family history. W.
