There are a lot of free websites that you can search for your ancestors. I have had the best of luck with Heritage Quest--the only drawback is that is not accessible in some areas. Go to your public library and see if you can get it in your area. If so, you have access to 1790-1920 census, many veteran records-including revolutionary war, and thousands of books that you can download pages from. I have gotten alot of info on my family from this website-and yes it is free. Good luck to all in your quest! Bev Atkinson--gggranddaughter of Samuel B and Margeret M Farrow Hunt.
I saw that Felicia and Joy were wondering about Jesse Hunt, son of Grandison. I descend from Grandison through his son John H >William Francis>Albert Dowe>Lawrence Ross>myself. I just recently found a piece of information on Jesse and have been doing a little research on this. Jesse and Salina Jane (Smith) Hunt were in Tennessee until at least 1859 and in Arkansas by 1862 according to the births of their children. Jesse probably died between Dec 1869 and Aug of 1870. He was a civil war soldier. I have not found them in the 1860 census yet. Salina and children appear in the 1870 Sebastin Co, Ark census as well as the Cedar Co, MO census. I corresponded with Clara about Grandison. She was a grand lady and as much as she did, I wish that some sort of proof or more clues pointed to Grandison's line. As much as I would like to, I still don't think we have enough evidence to point to his lineage. I hope this clears up where Jesse went. I'm still working on it and all of my notes are a mess right now but it should give you a general idea of his life. Any clues on this Grandison family is very welcomed!!!!!!!! Richard, Go to my webpage: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/h/e/Kenneth-Shelton-VA/index.html I have several reports & etc. on the two Abel's. I'm off Abel C. Hunt, the younger of the two Abels. He was married to Elizabeth F. Bell. The older Abel -- his uncle and brother of his father Gersham JR -- was married twice. His second wife was named Elizabeth, but her maiden name is unknown. Not that I really want to add yet another e-mail on a long chain, but since I appear to be the only dissenting input, consider this: Ancestry.com provides a very useful service in putting all this "shared" information in a single location, hosting in servers that keep that information -- as opposed to individuals who do it for so long and then quit or die, and the information along with them. And most importantly, provide a fully functional, context-based, search and indexing capability to find it. And I'm not sure who out there has "shared" JPEG images of every single image of the US census, or has "shared" full by-name indexes to entire post-1850s census free of charge. Both of these are provided in Ancestry, in addition to a host of databases that are not, in fact, the "shared" fruits of other people's labor. As a subscriber, I have gotten more than my money's worth. And I also received an e-mail reminder well in advance of the renewal date with an option to not have it done. Steve, there is a Rebecca Hunt b 10 Mar 1818 dtr of Zimri Hunt and Mary Dicks. Is this the one? I have to agree with you and I am not that far up there in years (BTW everybody, Hazel's birthday is in 3 days. shhhh, don't tell her I told you) Ancestry. com has allowed me to find information quickly, which I can then go and verify in person. I have had my beefs with them, but, like you, I now pay less than $100 a year and think that it is well worth it. It is the only thing I pay for online. I have found living relatives doing research on lines which I thought were dead an that I was the only one left alive to search. It may not be for everybody. After all a hundred dollars is a hundred dollars. If you can afford it, you might find that your bigamist grandfather once lived in Michigan (in hiding before getting his second family) by finding his WW I draft card. His address where he livrd with my father is on his WW II draft card and I found my father's enlistment card as well for WW II. All with just a few key strokes. I am, after all, up at 2:11 in the morning doing research on ancestry right now A practice which my local libraries and courthouses seem to frown upon. Happy HUNTing to all, however you do it. I looked in my database and see you are 4 years older than I am, so I guess you to have the right to forget things also. We discussed this about 2 months ago. Your database stopped at William Hunt and Jane Unknown. You were telling me that his son, John Martin Hunt and Martha Bowen, my 3rd great grandfather wasn't part of "the 14". To put this cost in perspective. Ancestry.com is less than $200 for the year for the US databases. There are 365 days in a year at less than $200 so that is less than $1 a day for the use of the info they have for the US. For me I can't get to the LDS library without going 30 miles one way, so I have to pay for gas @ $2.50 a gal. I also have to eat somewhere (at $4+) to spend the day, providing Milwaukee's. LDS isn't too busy if so I may only have an hour on their machine. If so I have to go home and come back another day or two. Sure Ancestry has a few problems, but all in all, I can use it from home at any time of day or night whenever I have a few minutes or an hour to do so. I appreciate all the info they have and have found many things that I would have to travel out of state to get and that is more expensive than the subscription. I DON"T give them a credit card. Every year, I mail the check to them and renew my subscription therefore I don't have the hassle of them renewing it automatically. Someone has to get paid for gathering all the info for their databases etc. For me it is cheap entertainment and a wealth of information. ----- Original Message ----- From: "wilson hunt" <wshiii@chartermi.net> To: <hunt@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2007 9:36 AM Subject: Re: [HUNT] Ancestry.com from an unhappy costumer > Jeff are you part of the Ralph Hunt line that came to Yakdin and Rowan? > I envy you because of all the history you are sitting in the middle of. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <JRB6886@aol.com> > To: <HUNT@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2007 6:48 AM > Subject: [HUNT] Ancestry.com from an unhappy costumer > > >> Personally, my experiences with Ancestry.com have be bad. Hello Hazel, You say you are of "The 14". I can not remember if we have talked before, or not. Just how do you fit in? My line goes from me, Allen D. Hunt, to Allen F. Hunt, to Herman Hunt, to Thomas Sumpter W. "Pappa Daddy" Hunt, to George McDuffie Hunt, to William Lacy Hunt, to Esli Hunt who was one of "The 14." I do have lots of information and it is under the web site that Courtney established at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/4813/ .. I also did some research on those "Indian HUNTs" that live near the NC/SC border -- of the Tuscarora and the Lumbe Tribes, That database is also at Courtney's web site. There is an interesting story there of adopted last names. Some of Hunts were in Georgia and married into my Payne and Walker lines in Blairsville, Union County, Georgia. She is also on the Walker list. So far we only connect on the Shumate line. My main Hunt line was in Autauga County, Alabama. My paternal great, great grandmother, Martha Melinda Hunt, married William Ross Weaver there. Two more Hunt siblings married siblings in the Weaver family. Talk about double kin, (:-} William and Melinda's daughter, Martha Susan Weaver married my great grandfather, Jonathan S. Payne from Blairsville, and they moved to Winn Parish, Louisiana with William and his family. My Hunt line is part of "the 14". I checked my database for your Rebekah and didn't find her. Catch you later. Hazel

This is made up of various data bases that individuals have down loaded. There is a lot of info there.
WOW!!! Now, I never thought of that. Perhaps I can slide around "charges" and continue to share freely with others. I think I will run out today and try that. Our Hall Co., GA library does, and it is free to use in the library for all patrons. ----- Original Message ----- From: <hunt-request@rootsweb.com> To: <hunt@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2007 3:15 AM Subject: HUNT Digest, Vol 2, Issue 37 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Well, well!!! I seem to have started a display of feelings about Ancestry.com. Actually, it is not against them. Rather, it is against anyone or any company that would try and make profit from the hard work of others. And, since I had heard that they automatically renewed your contract without asking if that was your wish, I would be even more upset. I like the fact that Courtney, in concert with others, has established this free Web Site that not only has GEDCOM databases but also has links to the Bible, Births, Cemeteries, Census, Immigrants, Inventories, Marriages, Manuscripts, Obituaries, Pension Records, Tax Records, Wills, I and, Links, Military Service, Miscellaneous, Photograph Album, and Queries. Now, that's close to perfection. For years and years, I dreamed about having a large enough computer that I could put everyone's database into it. Courtney is doing a good job, under Gedcoms. I tried to document all of the various HUNT lines that lived, at one time or another, in the state of Mississippi. It became an impossible task. I do not know what the limits are for the Web Site that Courtney established, long ago. But I would live to see many others add their database to the project. What a wonderful FREE wealth of information this would continue to be. Keep HUNTing. I do not like contracts that renew automatically. I do not like the fact that most of the information is information that has been donated by others or is material that has been copied from others. I use Family Tree Maker and have upgraded it many times. I now have FTW 16 but wish I was still using version 8. I hate the fact that no dates before 100 AD can be recorded. Not that it is needed very often. There are software packages available for free that are just as good. I do agree that Ancestry.com is like Walmart as I do not shop there either.
