    1. [HUNT-L] Genealogy/Web site software
    2. Don and Peggy Nutt
    3. Hello Todd, I have been asked several times the same question you have asked, and that is "Can you tell me a little about what software you are using with your Web site?" I have decided to make the information in this e-mail message to you into a template so that I will be able to more easily respond to others with the same question. Perhaps I will even place it as a separate page on my Web site, but I'm not sure of that yet. I would appreciate your comments on any of this information. My primary software is Microsoft's FrontPage 98. There are many Web site creation software packages (I will abbreviate to WSCS for brevity) on the market, but any computer magazine review you read will conclude, at least for now, that FrontPage is the grandiose of all such software. After having examined a few others, I agree. The main purpose of WSCS programs is to shield the user from having to know HTML, which is the language of the World Wide Web. Most WSCS programs do this reasonably well. However, FrontPage stands out from the others because of its ability to "administrate" your Web site. As your genealogy Web site becomes larger, as mine now is, you may find that you have thousands (no exaggeration) of hyperlinks. Checking for broken or erroneous links would be so time consuming, and you might never catch them all. Also, such tasks as changing a hyperlink is automatically done by FrontPage where ever it is used (on all the pages) once you make the first change. In addition, FrontPage is easy to use (at least I think so). FrontPage is not cheap. Your first copy will run about $149, with upgrades costing around $50. However, I think you will not regret your purchase. Please keep in mind that you will want to learn some HTML anyway. Some special effects on a Web page are, as of now, not available in any WSCS program. But, HTML is absolutely the easiest computer language I have ever learned. I am self-taught. The first HTML book I purchased was a simple and inexpensive book ($17.95) titled "HTML For The World Wide Web" by Elizabeth Castro. This 256 page book (the 2nd edition was) is not something you must read from cover to cover. It's more of a reference type work. When you want to do something in particular with HTML, just look up the task in the index and read the one or two pages on it. It's really not hard. I would recommend starting with this book. Between HTML and WSCS programs, you will then be set to create marvelous pages for your site. Now on to the genealogy software you will need. First of all, any genealogy database software program that is capable of reading and writing GEDCOM files is sufficient for the purpose of collecting and computerizing your family data. From your e-mail messages to me you seem very computer literate, so I presume you no doubt already use something for this purpose. I personally use Family Tree Maker for Windows, but any of the genealogy software will do as long as it supports GEDCOM. The last two pieces of software you need are (1) a GEDCOM "cleaning" program that removes information from your file for persons yet living, and (2) GEDCOM to HTML converter software. In both cases you must first start with a GEDCOM file of your data. At the risk of sounding a bit "preachy" on the issue of GEDCOM cleaning, I will say that most responsible on-line genealogists protect the privacy of living people by not putting on the WWW any birth or marriage information for living people. For a better understanding of this issue, please read my Privacy Policy at ... <http://www.dnutt.com/database.htm#privacy> The software I recommend for GEDCOM cleaning is Tom Raynor's shareware program titled GEDClean. You may obtain a copy at ... <http://members.aol.com/tomraynor2/gedclean.htm> Finally, you will need converter software that will automatically create for you your HTML pages from your data. It is absolutely wonderful not having to retype all of our family data into Web pages! Here are two shareware suggestions for GEDCOM to HTML converter software. I am registered to use both of them, and you can view my Web site to see examples at <http://www.dnutt.com>. [PLEASE NOTE: Only my McPherson database is currently using Gedpage. The other databases are using GED2WWW, but as time permits I will be switching them over to Gedpage). Gedpage, written by Ron Jacob. Registration is only $10. <http://www.frontiernet.net/~rjacob/gedpage.htm> Current Windows version is 2.02. Great, easy to use shareware. The output is formatted as Family Group Sheets which are very familiar to genealogists. The only downside is that each family group sheet is a separate HTML file, usually with a file size of 2K to 3K. That means that if your computer's cluster size (sometimes called allocation units) is 16KB, 32KB, or 64KB you will be wasting TONS of hard disk space to store each of these little 2K files. I recommend this software highly for users whose computer is capable of using a FAT32 file system (such as Windows 98, or the latest version of Windows 95 which is version 4.00.950B). With a FAT32 file system you can setup your computer's cluster size to be only 4K, which is perfect for these small files without all of the hard disk wastage. If you computer can handle it, I think this is the best converter software anywhere! GED2WWW, written by Leslie Howard. Registration is $0 (Free!). <http://pw2.netcom.com/~lhoward/ged2www.html> Current version is 0.22. Produces very little HTML code, which is great for Web sites without much storage space. It does not have a fancy user interface (what do you expect for free), but this is not a problem. The software is customizable and easy to use. Hope this helps you with your decisions on software usage. Don Nutt Adrian, MI.

    2. Edward Hunt
    3. Hello, I have it through word of mouth from my grandfather that Walter an ancestor of mine and I am hoping to confirm this. Walter B. HUNT was an inventor in the first half of the 1800's. He is credited by several sources to have invented the safety pin. Family folklore says that he invented the sewing machine, but sold the rights to it to Elias Howe (Ironically, they are buried in the same cemetary in Brooklyn. I only discovered this recently). He died in 1859 and spent his early life in Lewis Co., NY. (Source: American Biographies). I am having trouble locating info on his parents and children (if any). Any help would be appreciated. 3. ATTEN: Sanford B Hunt Hi Sanford; I noticed that you seem to be a good source of genealogy information for people. I am trying to locate the parents of James Basil HUNT born Sept 20, 1844 in Hopkins Cty Texas. The only problem with that is, Hopkins was not formed until 1847 from Lamar and Nacogdoches Counties. All his memories were of Hopkins and that would be natural, he grew up there, went to war, and got married there. He died in Fairview Wilson, Texas Jan 13, 1938 I have located in Hopkins Cty census of 1860 persons that I believe are his 2 sisters and him staying with a John Parson at the Parson Farm. There is no mention of the parents so I assume that they died and these siblings went to live with John Parsons, Parson bought the HUNT farm or was working the farm for the Hunt survivors. Hopkins Cty census 1860 John Parsons head of household Siren HUNT 23 B VA abt 1838 Rebecca HUNT 20 b VA abt 1839 James (B. ?) HUNT 15 b TX abt 1844 the age of James HUNT is right for James Basil HUNT I figure it would do no good to look in the 1840 census of VA for the family since it would not give anything but the name of the head of household. Is it possible that you could provide any information or suggestions that would break the log jam ? I have been in contact with Lamar and Nacogdoches home pages and lookups but no luck so far, not even any replies ! Thank you for any help you can provide and I am subscribed to HUNT-L@rootsweb.com Duane Duanewin@gateway.net

    3. Nancy, Do you think this could be him ? I got no hits for birth year of 1903. James Hunt SS#: 371-10-5802 Issued in: Michigan Birth date: Sep 23, 1902 Death date: Apr 1970 Residence code: Michigan ZIP Code of last known residence: 49733 Primary location associated with this ZIP Code: Frederic, Michigan other site says : 49733 (Grayling, Crawford, MI) If you think so, and you have $7.00 to spend, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/ssdi/advanced.htm or http://www.familytreemaker.com/fto_ssdisearch.html and type in the SS# to find him listed, then click "write it" and it will write you a letter to send to the SS office to get his SS application. 1. [HUNT-L] Need help - James Hunt
    2. Hi, This is my first time posting to this group so I hope I'm doing it right. I'm trying to work on my father's family. His name was James A. Hunt. Born Sept 23, 1903 somewhere in W. Virginia. Died April 17, 1970 in Frederic, MI. This information from his death certificate. Married Lillie E.Pruitt (my mother) in Flint, MI June 25, 1937. Marriage license gives father's name as Dan Hunt (Death cert. gives father's name as George) I tend to think Dan is correct. He was born in Virginia. Year unknown. Marriage license gives mother's name as Mary Carmack. Death certificate lists Mary Mays (probably remarried.) James had two brothers George and Gilbert, both younger, I think. My father and mother were divorced in the 1940's when I was small. I know that he married again twice and had 2 children by the 2nd wife (have no name). Have not been able to locate 3rd wife, Cynthia Tuller. I am waiting to receive soundex for the 1900, 1910 and 1920 in West Virginia, meanwhile thought someone might have some information. Thanks for any help. And again I apoligize for the length . Nancy Hunt Phelps RD'sNancy@aol.com

    2. Jimmie & Joan Justice
    3. Dear subscribers, At an auction I bought 2 very well done portraits in quite poor condition that had been let go by ex-wife of the family (I was told). These portraits are of Dr. George Seymour b 1816 d 1861 son of Moses Seymour II and his wife Sarah Hunt Seymour b 7-5-1821 or 1823 and died 4-21-43 or 1877? These are large portraits and the frames are heavy and well made. They are not signed as well as I can tell. I have an appointment with the Nelson Art Gallery in K.C, MO to learn more about them. My other question is whether or not I am related to Sarah. She is not in my direct line but I would like to have the relatives of her father Arad Hunt 22-9-1790 and mother Sally Newell. Thanks for your help. Joan Kay Merrihew Justice (daughter of Maxine Hunt (deceased 1996) daughter of Charles Lincoln Hunt b 18 - 12 - 1877 and d 15 - 2 - 1905 of NE.) Aren't there any Hunts out there from Nebraska? Thanks, Joan

Sandy Hunt in Lubbock Texas: ************************************************************************* Descendants of James G. HUNT - 1 Nov 1998 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIRST GENERATION 1. James G. HUNT was born on 24 Jul 1732 in Virginia. He died before Feb 1805 in Robertson Co., Tennessee. Was listed 5th and as "under age 21" in his father's (Henry) will in 1750. He received "land above my plantation wheron I now live adjoining Bufalloe (sic) Creek, & negro boy, Cato. He was evidently born in or near Brunswick Co., Va., and was living with his father in 1750 in Granville Co., N.C. on land that fell into Bute Co. in 1764 and into Franklin Co. in 1779. He was married by about 1754, as 1st child was born 17 Sept. 1755 (per family records). See manuscript of Mrs. Catherine Bond Gheesling (Mrs. Frank A.) of 3102 Bellingham Dr. NE Atlanta, Ga. 30346. Dated 1987. In Atlanta Archives. James Sr. left a will dated 22 Aug 1803 in Robertson Co., Tennessee. It was proved in Feb. 1805. Executors were his sons,Sion and John. He listed all his children and left legacies to each of $1.00 except Shadrack was left l negro, Milly; and William was left 100 acres, part of homeplace, l feather bed and 1 saw. William lived in Tenn. Mathew was left 1 black mare and colt (lived in Tn.?) John was left 540 acres, rest of homeplace, 1 negro, Sylvia, 1 mare, 1 gun, 1 bed and furniture, all plantation tools, and all that was left to his mother, Mary (widow), in his father's will. In another account of this family (copied in Ky. Gen. Soc. at Frankfort from their files in 1986) it gives the wife of James G. Sr. as: "Mary Gabrielle LaFontaine" This account is not signed and there is no indication of who submitted it. He was married to Mary RACKLEY about 1754 in Virginia. Mary RACKLEY was born about 1735 in Virginia. She died after 1803 in Tennessee?. Mrs Frank A. Gheesling in her very fine treatise on "The William Huntt/Hunt Family of Southside Virginia" (Found in Atlanta Georgia Archives) states: "Mary's name has not yet been proven. It is possible that she was the 'daughter, Mary Hunt, listed in the 1767 will of John Rackley of Bute Co.,N.C'...." The name of James' wife in his will of 1803, is Mary, and so it is presumed he married only once. James G. HUNT and Mary RACKLEY had the following children: 2 i. Henry HUNT was born on 17 Sep 1755. !Was left $1. in his father's Will. +3 ii. Lucy HUNT. 4 iii. Mary HUNT was born on 16 Apr 1759. Was called Mary Jones in her father's will and was left $1.00. +5 iv. Moses HUNT. +6 v. James HUNT jr.. +7 vi. Shadrack HUNT. 8 vii. Agnes HUNT was born on 27 Jul 1766. Married a Mr. Coon. Was left $1.00 in her father's will. +9 viii. William HUNT. +10 ix. Matthew HUNT. +11 x. Sion HUNT. +12 xi. Judith HUNT. +13 xii. John HUNT. SECOND GENERATION 3. Lucy HUNT was born on 15 May 1757. Compare the incoming with the result. ******************************************* Incoming message Hi, I have been given your name as an "expert" in finding Hunt relatives. Here is a big challenge! My gg grandmother was Matilda Hunt, born in GA on 8 Nov 1813 and died 3 Dec 1889 in Russell County, AL to John Hunt and Elizabeth ?. John died 15 June 1831. Matilda married Mark A. Burnett in 1842 in Taliaferro County, GA. She had a brother named Hezekiah Hunt who married Dovie Fallin on 3 July 1845 in Taliaferro County, GA. I have Matilda and Mark's family bible. In it is the name of Thomas Hunt - no date, John Hunt, and Henry E. Hunt who died in the Civil War in 1864 Henry could also have been a son, but it doesn't say. It mostly gives information on the families who descended from Mark and Matilda. As a child I was always into genealogy. My grandmother said Matilda's father came from NC and VA. I cannot prove that. Do you happen to have this family in your database? Thank you in advance. ******************************************************************* Response:: I do have an isolated family that could be yours considering that people make mistakes in making entries: John Hunt b. abt 1780 m. 15 Oct 1803 Greene Co., GA d. 15 July 1831 in Green County.
