Manry Hunt. The Hunt Newsletter is published by a Mormon group. Copies of some are in my files. John and Ann settled on the Butler side of Mud River. Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 2nd ed., 1885, Butler Co. THE HUNT FAMILY. The progenitor is John Hunt, who was born in 1800, and is now eight-five years old; he is a native of Rowan County, N.C.; came to Kentucky, when a youth and followed farming, from which he retired a few year [sic] ago. In 1820, he married Anna Jenkins; she was born in Rowan County, N.C., in 1801, and soon after removed with her parents to Kentucky, where she still resides at the age of eight-four years. John Hunt is a son of Daniel Hunt, who came from North Carolina to Kentucky in 1804, and located in Muhlenburgh [sic] County; he moved to Warrick County, Ind., where he died at the age of seventy years. He was a farmer and a son of John Hunt, who was of English extraction, and a native of Virginia; he lived to the ripe old age of eighty-four, having for fifty years of his life been a minister of the Gospel in the Baptist Church. WIFE NOTES: Ann JENKINS CHILD NOTES: Mariah HUNT CHILD NOTES: Alexander HUNT MD General: Old Hebron Churh cemetery record calls him: Dr. Alexander Hunt. >From " A History of the State" Battie, Perrisn & Kniffen 2nd ED. 1885, Butler County DR. ALEXANDER HUNT, a son of John and Anna (Jenkins) Hunt, passed his early life on a farm, attending school for a short time each year, until he attained his eighteenth year, when he constructed a flat-boat, on which he floated a cargo of staves to New Orleans; finding the trade lucrative he continued it for four years, after which he tried farming for a few years; then read medicine and took his degree in the Louisville Medical College in 1878, since which time he has followed the practice of his profession, in connection with the business of superintending his farming interests. He gives much of his time to the improvement of the country. He is an advocate of the temperance cause, and is interested in all educational enterprises. Politically he is a Republican; is liberal in his views, and does not know men by their politics. His wife, Catherine J. Clark, whom he married April 8, 1849, is a daughter of David and Martha Clark of Hickman County, Ky. Their marriage has been blessed with twelve children, eight of whom are living: Martha A., Henry D., William C., Jonathan A., Elias M., Alexander, David and Katie H.; those deceased are John T., Letitia J., Ota and an infant unnamed. It appears that he had a wife earlier who died in 1848. Remarried in 1849 as shown above. CHILD NOTES: William HUNT CHILD NOTES: Elias HUNT CHILD NOTES: Daniel HUNT General: See Hunt paper noted previously for long history of this Daniel & family. Daniel was a life-long member of the Methodist Church. He opened the first general merchandise store in the community known as Gum Grove. Gum Grove became Huntsville, Ky. in honor of Daniel. He was a Master Mason, a member of Rochester Lodge No. 270. He and Sarah Catherine gave land and built the Methodist Church which is still being used for worship today (1983). He also gave the land in back of the church which is used for the cemetery in which he, his wife, some children and grandchildren are buried . He is believed to be the first settler, having built a house there in Gum Grove as a bachelor and took his bride to Huntsville and remained for their lifetime. FROM ANOTHER SOURCE: DANIEL HUNT, a brother of Dr. Alexander Hunt, was born in Butler County, September 13, 1832. He is a son of John and Anna (Jenkins) Hunt, above mentioned. He was educated in the common schools of the district in which he resided, and at the age of nineteen launched himself upon the sea of life; his first undertaking was to construct a flat-boat on Mud River, on which he shipped a load of staves to New Orleans; the undertaking proved successful, and for several years he continued in the same business; then for three years he worked in a tobacco warehouse for the firm of Tanner & Campbell, and in that time bought and paid for 196 acres of land, where he now resides, in Butler County, to which he has added by subsequent purchase. He now owns 600 acres in Butler County and 160 acres in the State of Kansas. His farm is well improved and well kept, and he is among the most prosperous farmers in Butler County. Mr. Hunt is a Democrat politically, and in 1857 was elected constable, in which capacity he served twelve years, afterward held the office of magistrate in Butler County four years. In 1852, he bought and gathered from among the hills of Butler County, 250 head of wild sheep, which, with one assistant, he drove a distance of 150 miles through unbroken forests, to a market at Louisville, Ky. His return trip was made in three days, and on foot. His wife, Sarah C. Watkins, whom he married in 1857, is a native of Butler County; they are the parents of twelve children, ten of whom are living: Camelier J., Mary E., Henry, Warner, Vidia, Lydia J., Eridine, Williard, Lily M. and Bertha; those deceased are Nettie D. and Oscar. Mr. Hunt has been a member of the Methodist Church for thirty years; his wife and three children are also members of the same church. Hr. [sic] Hunt is a Master Mason, and a member of the Rochester Lodge, No. 270. He is a progressive citizen, and one of the "solid" men of Butler County; he takes a leading part in all public enterprises, and is a strong patron of schools and churches. 3. Further on the subject of Christopher and son John as shown in our Felicia FILES. "Have no proof, but Bill Hunt of Fairport, N.Y. and Clara Hunt Miller of Ca.believe Christopher to be a s/o Ralph III and brother to Memucan. Christopher transfered 100 acres of land in Anson Co., N. Carolina "granted to me 24 Apr. 1762" and was in Cheraw Dist., Craven Co., S. Carolina when he sold this on 10 March 1763 to William S. Sherley. See Mitchell Hunt's mss. on this individual in my file. Served in the Continental line, Rev. War record #3877-B. He died of smallpox, intestate. His wife, Catey, was administratrix of his estate. Moved from Granville Co., N.C. to near Lynches' Creek, S.C. between 1774 and 1776, apparently. Lived "less than 30 miles from Camden". On pg. 82 of Andrea I, Andrea is speaking of the will of Thomas Blassingame Hunt and states: "This family of Hunt in my extensive Hunt ms. came with Blassingames and others from old Cheraw and Georgetown Dist....He was a son of Christopher Hunt who wed Catey Blassingame...all came down from Virginia via N.C." 3. Thanks for the info. I have looked at the Leonardo genealogy files and have not been able to find the reference to the power of attorney to THomas B. HUNT but have found the power of attorney to Thomas Blassingham as his "trusty friend". I know of no direct proof that this John HUNT who was sherriff of Greenville Co. SC was the son of Christopher HUNT. I have seen other references that Christopher HUNT died of Small pox during the revolutionary War. Does anyone have a source for this claim? THanks for everybodies help especially Sandy! 3. Dear fellow researchers: It seems I have been shaking the wrong trees in my search for Alexander Hunt. I have discovered that he was born in Krikatala, Varmland Sweden in the mid-1800's. Here are some of the other stats I now have for him. m. Caroline Rose 13 January 1864 in Salina, Kansas Children: Josephine, William A., Mary A., Emma, Frank, August, Anna Emma, Ellen E. and my grandmother, Theodora Blinda Caroline Rose also came from Sweden and settled in Illinois where she married Geo Samuelson, her first husband. Her family name was Olsen. So, any Hunts with Swedish ties may find some connections for me, I guess. Thanks for your time. Regards, Stephanie Dahlberg

    1. [HUNT-L] Daniel Hunt, NC & KY
    2. >From the (in part) History of Butler Co., KY, A History of Butler Co., Ky and Its People (1987) - "The community of Huntsville was named for Daniel Hunt." He was the s/o John Hunt and Ann Jenkins Hunt, who came from N. Carolina and settled near Mud River, the section of the Hunt Settlement which was located in Butler County. The settlement was partially in Muhlenberg County. The Butler County portion was known as Gum Grove, from the many gum trees in that locality. Some early residents were families by the name of Hunt, Jenkins, Reid, Manley, Taylor, Vaughn, Anderson, Brooks, Fleming, Cowen and Porter. (just to mention a few). On the Rochester Road, adjacent to his farm Daniel Hunt opened the first general merchancdise store in the community, and Gum Gove became Huntsville. Daniel Hunt in later years sold the store to George Ward. Although Huntsville had been a small village for several years, no post office was established until 23 Oct 1878 when Ellen E. Cowen was appointed postmistress and served until 1882. Those following her were (incl. others): Burnie Hunt, 1891 & 1912., Samuel Fleming, 1910, Roy Vaughn, 1945 and Buddy Porter, 1987. The town of Huntsville was incorporated in 1899 and discontinued by an act of the legislature in 1920. William W. Reid operated a tanyard in Huntsville on what was called "Reid Hill". In 1951, Huntsville had three stores, one mill, three churches and one school. The churches were the Methodist, Baptist and Chruch of Christ. Does anyone recognize this Hunt (NC & KY) family and others living in Huntsville, Butler Co., KY? Many thanks! Carol Garrett ckgleo@aol.com

    3. This is what I have from the Felicia File: .. Moved from Chesterfield Co., S.C. to Union Co., along with brothers Thomas B. and William in about 1787. He then moved to Greenville Co., S.C., where he was Sheriff from 1792 to 1794, and in 1794, moved to Bracken Co., Kentucky. In 1803, he gave his brother, Thomas power of attorney to sign all legal papers for him in Union Co., S.C. and after the death of Thomas, gave similar power to "his friend, Thomas Blassinghame of Union Co., S.C.". He may have gone to Georgia for a time, before moving to Kentucky. SERVICE: Militia Duty in Water's Regiment, and Brandon's Regiment. Ref. Audited Act of John Hunt for Militia duty-aa 3879 PPLkk-3kk, South Carolina Dept. of Archives and History. (Per DAR records). DAR records do not agree with those shown re children and some dates ******************************************************** He was the son of Catherine Blassingame and Christopher Hunt and brother of Charles Jefferson Hunt of the MORMON Brigade Whether he was the one who signed the delaration I don't know. Felicia Gourdin <fgourdin@mindspring.com> might have the answer. Sandy in Lyubbock

My group moved from that area to Greenup Co, KY between 1826 - 1830. I've got a few Greenup Co Hunts on my genealogy page: http://www.zoomnet.net/~jamburg/hunt.html To do an easier search go to http://www.zoomnet.net/~jamburg/surnames.htm and choose HUNT from the list. 3. Helps wonderfully. Thank you very much. It is starting to look like there were at least 4 separate Hunt groups in Cortland Co, if not more. Japhet Hunt from Columbia Co. NY (arrived before 1800 census) Samuel D. Hunt from Broome Co. NY (arrived in Cortland in abt 1853) Asa Hunt from CT (arrived in 1827) Simeon Hunt from RI/Mass - Arrived circa 1820. There is also a Dorus Hunt who arrived late, but I suspect he is connected to Asa. They have a lot of the same lines in common. In the 1870 census, Dorus was 33, so he was born circa 1837. That could mean he is 1 gen down from Asa, but I have all of Asa's children documented. He might be a nephew or something. I suspect that Dorus is from the Washington Co. NY area, since a Dorus Hunt married a Jane Thornton there during the 1860's and Thornton's appear in every other line of my genealogy. Thanks again. 3. I am still looking for William HUNT that lived in MI in the mid 1800s. His middle initial may have been J. I have found nothing on him but a little more on his family. William HUNT m. Mary MAHER (b.March 15, 1827 Ireland d. August 20, 1900 Elkhart IN.). They had a son William James HUNT b. Oct 26, 1857 in Detroit MI. William James m. Julia McGOWEN 1891 in Port Huron, MI. In the 1900 census Elkhart IN. Mary Maher HUNT is listed as a widow & had only one child. William James HUNT's father is listed as born in loauala (ENG.). In the 1910 census William James HUNT's father is listed as born in ENG. ERGLSH. Apparently William James & his mother lived together until she died 1n 1900 & possibly moved to Elkhart in 1881, but never a mention of the father William HUNT. They were probably all Catholics. I cannot find Mary Maher HUNT and her son William James HUNT in any other census. I have a note which may or may not be related to the above: William J. HUNT m. Mary Ann 12/May 1844 St. Pancras Old Church. Does anyone know where this church may of been?

I have other connections in Washington County: Leonard, Waldo and Phelps. Is there a chance you have Esther listed in your records? I think her father's name was Moses.
