    1. [HUNT-L] Slaves of Joseph L. HUNT of Halifax Co., VA
    2. Hello HUNTers, When I started, a few years ago, to find my "roots", I had no idea if, or not, that any of my ancestors were slave owners. I hoped not! I was disturbed to find that they did. My g-g-grandfather, Ambrose HUNT, and his father, Joseph L. HUNT, were slave owners. I must say, to Ambrose's credit, that when he left Halifax Co., VA and came to Kentucky he apparently disposed of his slaves and, to my knowledge, never owned them again. In fact, most of his grandsons were Unionists, some of them serving in the Union Army. I know that African Americans have a daunting task when trying to find their ancestors. It is my hope that the following will provide some clue that will help. Here is an excerpt taken from the inventory of the estate of Joseph L. HUNT, prepared by his widow, Rachel, the Administratrix. The inventory was recorded 18 March 1756 by the Court of Halifax Co., VA. 1 Negro named Sam 1 Negro woman named Ann 1 Negro man named Tom 1 Negro woman named Gean (or Jean) 1 Negro boy named Jupiter 1 Negro boy named Cyrus 1 Negro boy named Bristol 1 Negro girl named Nealon 1 Negro boy named Titus I don't know, but it is inferred, that these may have been two families; which of the children belongs to whom cannot be determined. I have NO idea if these people assumed the HUNT name, as so often was the case, upon being freed. Perhaps they did. If anyone thinks that, perhaps, they may descend from the above named, I will answer any questions as well as I am able. M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY

    3. A MS written in the last centurary has just found it's way to me. It appears that HENRY HUNT of Cappawhite, in Ireland, having settled his family after the death of his 2nd wife took a notion to emigrate. He with one of his brothers, nephews and cousins took 300 emigrants and settled at Viewmount State of Georgia, North America. He purchased large estates and subsequently married Mary, the daughter of JAMES RYAN of Cappaghwhite (one of his old tenants), and one of the party he took out to America with him. They had issue, James Constance and Phineas - all born at Viewmount. At the declaration of the American War of Independence all British subjects were ordered to leave. Consequently Henry with his 3 children and wife started for Ireland and left the state in charge of his friends and those he took out with him as emigrants. He arrived safely to Ireland, lived there for a considerable time. and died at the advanced age of 84 None of that branch returned to America, however his brother, who I think was called Fitzmaurice Hunt remained. The other unusual Christian names used by that branch were: Damer, Piercy Dawson and Vere. Ring any bells with anybody? Cheers, Peter in Ireland.

    1. [HUNT-L] HUNT Success Story!
    2. Hello HUNTers, My recent query regarding HUNT marriages found on FTM CD #233, that were unknown to me has had FABULOUS results! Responses have led me to discover a branch of my family that I had just about given up on finding. I found Ambrose Clinton HUNT, grandson, and namesake, of Ambrose HUNT of Halifax Co., VA (son of Joseph L. HUNT of same). All I had was Ambrose C. HUNT and his date of birth, never knowing that C. was for Clinton, and he was known as Clint HUNT. I should have known that anyone with a name such as Ambrose, given a choice, would have used another name. If anyone is interested in knowing about this family, I now have three generations (some lines) and will be happy to post family sheets to the list. If no one is interested I will not tie up storage space on Rootsweb. Merry Christmas! M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY

    1. [HUNT-L] Edward Hunt
    2. Richard E. Pfleger
    3. I have found an Edward Hunt on Main Street, Kinsale, County Cork from an 1842 City Directory.(Really, Judy Thomas did a look up for me and she found him.) I am hopeful to find out more about him. If he is the right person than this is who I would like confirmed. Edward was married to Mary Dunnovan and they had a least 3 children-- Edward, Patrick born 2 Mar 1838, and Julia. Patrick emigrated to US and married a Mary Donovan in Lockport, Lemont, Romeoville, IL around 1860 amd had at least 6 daughters. One of these daughters was Julia Hunt Swan who was my grandmother born 1 Nov 1866 and died on 1907 in Lemont. Patrick Hunt, AKA, Grandpa Hunt to my mother was her favorite person in her life. My mother, Margaret Swan Pfleger will be 93 on 2 Jan 1999 and nothing would please her more than to find out a little about this very special person in her life who she lived with as a child after her mother died in childbirth. Any suggestions? Where is Kinsale? Who would I write to? I believe it is the Diocese of Ross or Cork and my understanding is there are no Hertige Centers currently covering this areas. All ideas would be appreciated. Time is getting thin. Thanks Richard in Atlanta
