It has come to my attention that I may have posted some faulty information on the parentage of Gilbert Hunt of North Salem, New York. This is my in-laws family and I only accepted what they have given to me as their version of the family tree. I was not my intent to confuse anyone and I am truly sorry if this did. Occasionally I put this stuff down and pursue other interest and forget where my material has weaknesses. Please accept my apologies. Dale Davidson ddavidson@geocities.com
I am just now getting around to reading the Jan 17 mail concerning the family of Thomas Bryan who married Sarah Hunt. I don't believe Thomas could have been the Dr. Thomas Bryan of the Revolution. He was dead in Rowan Co. NC by 6 Feb 1777 when Sarah, his widow was named administrator of his estate with Jonathan Hunt and Andrew Hunt as security. This record is in the McCubbin Collection in Salisbury NC. I have a family record death date of 10 Feb 1776 (no other reference). Martha Bryan, daughter of Thomas and Sarah, was born 5 Aug 1771 and died 1848. Her birth date is in the Bryan Bible - a copy of which is in KENTUCKY BIBLE RECORDS done by the KY DAR Feb 1933 and a copy of that is in the Kentucky Historical Society. She married first Daniel (Stephen) Gano (son of John). Their daughter Mary Forbish Gano married (1)Lewis Howard Bryan as a second wife. Lewis Howard Bryan was the son of Jonathan Bryan (Martha's brother) and Elizabeth Howard. Lewis Howard Bryan was my husband's ggg grandfather. Martha married (2)Elisha Cobb . "Gano-Ganoe-Ganow" by Lemaster page 187 also gives the parents of Mary Forbs Bryan as Daniel Gano and Martha Bryan and her husbands as Lewis H. Bryan and Elisha Cobb. Betty Carson
Eunice, I don't know if there is any connection, but my father, James Alva Hunt was born in Beartown, McDowell Co., WV Sept 23, 1902/1903. Beartown is only a short distance from Welch. His parents were George William Hunt and Mary Elizabeth Mayes. I wonder if they could be related somehow to your Hunts? The only thing I know about my Hunts is George William Hunt was born in MI, his father, James Hunt, in Ontario, Canada about 1817. James Hunt's father was born in WV or what may have been VA about 1790-1795. I don't know his name and I don't even know if he was born in this area of WV, but I've always assumed they must have still had family in this area to go back to such a secluded place. My Hunts went back to MI sometime after 1920. Some of the names that seem to be repeated are James, George and Alva. My father also had a brother named Gilbert. Nancy
Hello, I am new to the list and I thought that I would write in hopes that someone out there might know the HUNT family that I am researching. Not much is known on this HUNT family except what was passed on to me by the son who wants to know more about his father's family. Lloyd "Louie" HUNT b. 30 May 1948 in Chillicothe, Ohio was the son of Virgil HUNT b 16 Jul 1900-Welch, McDowell, WVa, and Bonnie Bessie SPURLOCK. Virgil died May 1970-Baltimore, MD. I have found information that leads me to believe that Virgil was the son of James H. HUNT b.abt. 1872-WVa, and the grandson of John H. HUNT b.abt.1852-VA, but I have yet to prove it. Any information that anyone may be able to help me with will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and help. This name is so close and being from New York also sends out flags but I cannot make a direct connection. My variety of Charles A. Hunt isn't born until 1830. Howard Curran's question on Pleasant Hunt: I find a Pleasant Hunt (female)born in New Garden , Rowan County, NC. Could he have been a QUAKER? This is a single entry name no relatives. b. was 15 Jan 1808. Another of the same birthdate shows as Dr. Pleasant Hunt-with wives as stated by Howard but no children. Another PLEASANT Hunt born 1806 shows as the daughter of Rebecca Beavers and William Hunt Sandy in Lubbock
The 1850 Census of Surry Co., NC has, on pages 263b & 264a, a Pleasant HUNT, 42 Male, and a farmer. Listed in the household are: Charity, 46 female; Leander, 12 male; George, 10 male; Nathan, 9 male; Susannah, 7 female; William, 6 male; Leonidus, 4 male; Mary, 1 female; and Emily CONRAD, 20 female. Is this the Pleasant HUNT, b. 15 Jan. 1808, son of William HUNT and Susanna CLEMMONS? I have his first wife as Ann WILLIAMS, who d. in 1849, and his second wife as Sarah FELLOWS - I don't show any children in my files for either wife. If this is the same Pleasant, who is Charity? Is she a sister, a cousin, or another wife. I couldn't find a Charity HUNT, of that age, in the Felicia file, or in my records. Norman Squires Hunt was b ca 1820 in Rensselaer Co NY and d 1 Jun 1890 age 70y 6m 17d and is buried in Center White Creek Cemetery. Hs father was Peter Hunt who m Joyce ?. Nothing further in my files on Peter, unfortunately. The source of the above is Richard Hillenbrand (71242,2343 on Compuserve in 1993). There were some Peter Hunts of the right time period out of the Rhode Island Hunts who travelled in this area, but none appear to fit this Peter. Mitchell Hunt has figured out some of these in "The Hunt Families of the Eastern Townships of Canada", 1978, copy available from the FHL. I will keep looking. Wonderful story about Absalom Hunt and the sawmill. It really keeps one going when we hear things like that. Makes all the hard work worthwhile. Thanks for sharing it. From Libba in MS
A super success story that emphasizes patience and persistence. I worked this for five years and Karen for more than 40.. Sandy in Lubbock --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: "Karen Krihwan" <krihwan@ncinter.net> A happy ending story. My Aunt Ethel and I have been looking for a Absalom Hunt about 40 years now, the story we were told goes like this. George Francis Hunt told his children that his father was killed at his saw mill as he fell into the saw blade and was cut in half. George also told us that trip to the lumber mill in or around Montreal, Canada was his present for his 12th Birthday. He also said that his father was buried inside a church that was being built at the time of his death. Hundred of letters later, nothing was ever found on this matter. We finally were able to receive a copy of George's Death certificate. andit said George was Born June 21, 1851 in the state of New York. So we assumed George's father died around June 21, 1863. or 1864. Spent years looking for Birth records of George, but nothing has appeared. Arround January 2, 1999, I found a Canadian site one night and e-mailed a Robert there, and he gave me the name of Pennie Redmile, who lived in Montreal, He thought she would be the best help for me, since we thought it was around Montreal, that we were looking. Well I contacted Pennie Redmile by e-mail and we talked and she agreed to take my case for a fee. Last Night January 19, 1999, I received this E-mail. "Subject Line: BINGO!!!!!!!!!! Here's the record you requested. The orginal comes from the Anglican Church serving Milton and Roxton in the year 1854 on the front of folio 14, Quebec National Acrhives microfilm #124.3 Buried On the twenty second day of June One thousand eight hundred and fifty four by me, George Slack, Minister of the Church of England within the wallsof the Church at Upton, the body of Absalom Hunt, Late Private of the 52nd Reg't L. I. son of the Late JosephHunt, of Trumbrige, Wiltshire, England and of Charlotte his wife, maidenname Rennell. Having been unfortunately killed by a circular saw on the day previous. Aged 40 years." In presence of (unwitnessed) (signed) Geo. Slack Off Minister To finally realize the family story is really true, is just numbing afterall these years of looking for clues. Maybe because we had the wrong dates it help with all the confussion all these years. just goes to proof not all things are facts. George was either 3 years old at the time of his fathers death, or George had a big secret to keep in his age. being 10 years older than he told everyone. But still a very happy ending to 40 years of looking for one person, we not only found out the story was true by we found the name of his parentsand where they were from and Absalom served in the army, I assume. I highy Recomend Pennie Redmile for search in the Quebec, Montreal area. Thanks for listening Sandy, I think I am still numb. Hi everyone, The information about Ralph Hunt B. 1749 (I don't know where) and died 1829 in Miami County, Ohio was gleaned from books called History of Miami County, Ohio (Beers, 1880) and History of Darke County, Ohio (Beers, 1880). I didn't do the "gleaning" and am sure there is more information in these books about the family, but I don't have access to them. Do any of you know of these books? I am trying to find a connection to this line because they seem to migrate to the exact areas that my family went, OH>IN>IOWA. My oldest Hunt that I have found records for is Job (Jobe, Jobie) Hunt who married Rosannah Stone in Darke County, Ohio 1835. Job's sister Jane married Hiram Brady in 1833 in Campbell County, Kentucky. The path NC>KY>OH>IN is very conceivable. I have notes that were scribbled into the margins of my great-grandma Emma Hunt's Bible that say: "Blackhawk and the dates 1766-1838" "fought with Wayne's Army" These notes are in separate areas and I am not sure what they are referring to. My ggrandma Emma Hunt was born in Radnor, Indiana in 1874 and she had flaming red hair. She was very well educated. Her daughter even married a college graduate. Which seems rare for anyone born before 1900.
