    1. [HUNT-L] Good News for researchers..Rec'd from another List..
    2. ARCHIVE PUTS HUDDLED MASSES ON-LINE - Volunteers scanning Ellis Island Records. (SF Examiner 2/2/99) Climbing the family tree will take a lot less clawing as soon as a nonprofit foundation finishes a more than $15 million project to post Ellis Island immigration records on the internet. By helping people to access information instantly that previously was buried in a bureaucratic quagmire, the project will revolutionize genealogicial research for many of the more than 113 million Americans who already actively pursue their family histories. Officials at the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation in NY, the same organization that gave Lady Liberty a face lift in 1986 without any public funding, estimate that more than 40% of Americans can trace their European ancestry back to Ellis Island. "This is going to be a reference point", said Vern Deubler, Pres. of the Calif. Genealogical Society, which was based in San Francisco for a century before moving to Oakland this year. "It's going to provide people with very important leads". By the end of next year, the foundation hopes, people will be able to enter any information they know about a progenitor and the program will search more than 20 million records for a match. The software will even be able to tolerate misspellings. If a match is found, the researcher can choose to print out a photo of the ship and a copy of the original manifesto that marked the immigrant's arrival. At Fisherman's Wharf on Monday, Stephen Briganti, Chairman of the foundation, said the new database would especially help Bay Area researchers. He said the Bay Area remains one of the major hubs for Eliis Island immigrants and their descendants. Tens of thousands of immigrants came here after arriving through the port, first to fuel the Industrial revolution and later to farm wine grapes. He said first generation travelers from the main Ellis Island years - 1892 to 1924 - still live in the area. Briganti added that Californians' interest in Ellis Island immigration research, based on requests for the foundation's resources, is outstripped only by New yorkers'. The database - which organizers say could be ready by the end of 2000 - will catalog records of almost 20 million immigrants who flooded the tiny NY Harbor island. Until now, those documents have been stored at the National Archives and Immigration and Naturalization Service in the clunky microfilm format. The first phase of the project was to collect and digitize records and install computers at the museum. Now, Briganti said, putting the information on the Internet has become a top goal as well. "We're pretty confident this is going to work," Briganti said. "It's not perfect, but it's light years ahead of going to the Archives." A demonstration of the system showed that a reseacher can enter information in any or all of 11 fields, which ask for personal information such as the subject's name and country of birth, and immigration, like the subject's port of entry. Foundation spokeswoman Peg Zitko said the project got off the ground when a nationwide network of Mormon volunteers agreed to digitize the microfilm information for free. Thousands of volunteers have logged more than 2 million hours; they've entered 3/5's of the data so far. A spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City said the project was important to the church's mission. "We've always been involved in genealogy," said Dan Rascon, "because linking to our family helps us understand who we are and what we may become." Information on the project may be found at www.ellisisland.org on the internet. (And I just want you all to know that I typed this, not scanned, so I hope I get some appreciation out there!!!!!!!! Best, and good night! Terry in Calif.) 2. 2/4/99 Sandy, that is my family. Daniel James Hunt was born March 20, 1850 in Tennessee. His parents were Lewis Wilford Hunt (son of the notorious John Hunt)and Evaline Allen. Daniel married Amanda Clementine Trower, b. May 11, 1849. I believe she was born in Tennessee also. I have more on her family, but not at my fingertips. He died March 23, 1921 in Mt. Vernon, MO. She died March 1, 1926 in Mt. Vernon. Alonzo Ulysses Hunt was my grandfather, and Daniel James' son. Grandmother Cora Florence Moore was daughter of Gollahugh Blackburn Moore , and a descendant of Missouri pioneers. Susan and Lewis Elbert were Alonzo's siblings. Susan(known as Dona for some reason)married Grant Simmons. They lived in Kansas. Two other siblings were Eddie and J. Ola. I thought I had sent you my family at some time, but perhaps not. Will have to do that. If you are interested in the Trower line, I have some of that. Will send it tomorrow. Pat

    1. Re: Fw: [HUNT-L] Cherokee Hunt
    2. I too am looking for Indian blood in my family and know how hard it is to find the answers. Most of the reasons were explained in the letter to the list. I have just a few more. 1. If you don't know your families "Indian" name, then again you are lost. I have one side who's surname is Gilmore. His Indian surname was "Corkney". 2. Another reason is during some families raising, it was not good to have any Indian blood in your line. They were ashamed of this, so they kept it a secret. A very close friend of mine found that her ggrandmother was full blood Indian. She ask her mother and her mother said, " I don't want you to research my line, there are some thing you don't need to know." Well, this friend didn't give up and found her mother's family. She showed this to her mother, and her mother was so happy that she had found all of this information about her family that she didn't know that she went to her old trunk and pulled out about 4 books that had all of this information in it, and more. So don't give up!! I am very proud of my INDIAN BLOOD on both sides of my family. (Still haven't proved it yet!!) Wilma

    3. There are 4 Hunts located in the index of a rare Cherokee genealogy book of old cherokee families. I know one was a Joseph Henry Hunt who married a Ruth Jane Harlan. I found this at a rare book site that has an old Cherokee genealogy with the index posted, the 1835 Cherokee census posted, and a Cherokee genealogy tutorial that talks you through how to do Cherokee genealogy research, and other Cherokee genealogy books - a fascinating site. The site is http://members.aol.com/rarebk Once at the site, go to BOOKLISTS and then scroll down to the Starr book and invoke the index. You will also see, as you scroll down, the hot button to invoke the tutorial. 2. I wrote to Hunt-Wesson asking for the history of the company to see if I can connect those Hunts to mine. They sent me some information, and it was helpful, but I need some more help. "Brothers Joseph and William HUNT incorporated their Santa Rosa company in 1890 as the Hunt Brother Fruit Packing Company." They later relocated to Hayward California. My ancestor Amos Nelson HUNT of Missouri had three brothers who left for California c. 1858. Family history has that these brothers, Andrew, Wesley, and Jesse, went into the fruit business. So far I haven't found them in the CA census. I'm wondering if anyone has any information regarding the above Joseph and William as there may be a possibility they were sons of one of Amos' brothers. Thank you in advance for your help. I've made much progress on my Hunt line because of this list! Allison Patterson Jackson Co, MO rae@qni.com
