    1. [HUNT-L] The Choctaw Plaindealer, Thursday, May 16, 1991 -- PROFILE
    2. Allen D. Hunt
    3. PART ONE (QUOTE): Esly Marion Hunt By :B.R. Hunt Esly Hunt was born April 29, 1816, in Greenville County, S.C. and was the eldest son of William Lacy and Keziah McClanahan Hunt. He died April 29, 1892 and was buried in Steve's cemetery located in the Panhandle of Choctaw County, Mississippi. He was obviously named after his paternal grandfather, Esli Hunt, who had distinguished himself as an American Patriot representing the states of Virginia and North Carolina during the American Revolution. Private Esli Hunt was one of the nine hundred backwoodsmen Patriots at the "Battle of Kings Mountain" who had soundly defeated Major Patrick Ferguson and his eleven hundred Loyalist and British troops. (Major Ferguson was killed in the battle). Esly's wife, Jane Quarles Hunt, was also born in the Palmetto state August 24, 1823. She died June 20, 1903 and is buried adjacent to Esly in Steve's Cemetery. UNQUOTE: ***NOTE: I, Allen D. Hunt, will state that this cemetery is known as and call "Steed Cemetery" by all persons in the surrounding MS area.*** QUOTE (again): Esly's father died in 1836 in Greenville County, S.C. and since Esly was the eldest son he had been required to assume the male leadership role as head of the family at a very early age. He had three brothers, Pilate, John Robert and George McDuffin and four sisters, Rosa, Orpha, Julia and Jane. His maternal grandparents, John and Mary Robinson McClanahan, and their family (excluding Keziah) had already settled in Southeast Choctaw County, Mississippi, and would later migrate to Louisville in Winston County. They operated some of the first businesses in Louisville, which included a hotel. [Four Unreadable Words] lands of Choctaw, Winston and Oktibbeha Counties among others had been made available to white settlers sometime after 1830. The Choctaw Indians were given the option of leaving the land and moving to Oklahoma as a tribe or remaining on the land as U.S. citizens and given a section (640 acres) of land. This was a result of the "Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek" signed by Greenwood Leflore in Noxubee County who represented the Choctaw Indians. Oktibbeha, Winston and Choctaw Counties among others were not made official counties of the State of Mississippi until 1833; however, some settlers came in early and purchased lands from the Choctaws. In Oklahoma, under similar Indian treaties, these early settlers were called "Sooners" but in Mississippi they were just referred to as "Early Settlers." Most of the early settlers in these three counties were from the Carolinas and Virginia and many of these were of Scotch-Irish descent. These were a determined and stubborn breed of settlers and it has been said that when they prayed, they prayed the following prayer: "Lord, grant that I may always be right, for Thou knowest that I am hard to turn." Young Esly, who was only twenty one years of age at the time and in the true spirit of a young westward pioneer, rode a mule from Greenville County, S.C. to Southwest Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, in 1837, according to tradition. Here he bought land from a man by the name of Tom Davis and then returned to Greenville County S.C. on the mule. He rounded up the family slaves and returned to Mississippi. (His father, Lacy, was shown on the 1830 census of Greenville County, S.C. as owning 9 slaves). Esly and the slaves cleared some of the newly acquired land and they planted their first crop in Mississippi. This land, although in Oktibbeha County, bordered on the Southeast parameter of Choctaw County. UNQUOTE -- End of this Part One of Two Parts submission.........

    1. [HUNT-L] Joseph L. HUNT, Halifax Co., VA
    2. Hello HUNT Hunters, I have a photo copy of the following regarding the estate division of Joseph L. Hunt: IN OBEDIANCE to an order of Halifax County Courts bearing date the 15th day of this instant, We the subscribers have divided the value of the slaves oh Joseph Hunt, decd., among his children to wit. Robert Robinson, John, Joseph, James, William, Ambrose, Benjamin & Rachel who intermarried with John Ashbee (Ashby?) and find each child's part to be Twenty four pounds thirteen shillings and fourpence with interest thereon from the time they respectively came of age 'till paid. Given under our hands this 21st day of August 1776 Signed: Walter Coles, Isaac Coles Returned: 20 November 1777 Today, while researching at The Filson Club in Louisville, I found the following, which I had not seen before: 4 October 1763. This is to certifie that my father, Joseph Hunt died intestate & left an estate of land, negroes & other personal estate, and James Hunt became security for my mother's administration...and upon her marriage with Joseph Ashby, the sd. Hunt was apprehensive the estate was likely to be wasted & summoned Ashby to Court to give counter security which he failed to do... The Court ordered the widow's thirds to be laid off, and the other two thirds they put in the hands of sd. James Hunt for the use of Sd. Joseph Hunt's children (six negroes, land & (pound sign) 40 personal estate), all of which I acknowledge to have received as heir at law.. Signed: R.R.Hunt Wit: J. McCraw (sic), Thos. Tunstall Recorded 16 August 1764 This receipt from Robert Robinson to James Hunt... Now, my sister maintains that Rachel (who intermarried with John Ashbee/Ashby was a daughter of Joseph Hunt and Rachel Robinson. I, on the other hand, thought that, perhaps, this Rachel was the widow of Joseph Hunt, because I knew that she had remarried to an Ashby. I now believe my kid sister was correct, and the widow Rachel married Joseph Ashby, as stated in the above. My question now is, was John Ashbee/Ashby the son of Joseph Ashby? Questions.....questions.......one answer only brings two more questions! M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY

I understand there is a small Hunt Cemetary somewhere in this area, which I think may contain remains of my family also. The 2 people I'm looking for are Daniel Hunt, who died Feb 22, 1842 and his wife Agnes, who died in 1854. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much Veda

    2. Ellen: I don't know a thing about this, but it sounds fascinating! If you find out more---let us know? My aunt (a HUNT) had a dear friend in N.Y.C. who was Cornelia DePuyster Hunt. She was from a prominent N.Y. Hunt family, but I know nothing more. They used the claim "kinship", but I don't know if this was "for real". I have a beautiful small (about 6" X8" oil portrait of Cornelia when she was a young child. It is truly beautiful and I wish I knew who was related to her and know they would love to have this painting! 1. Re: [HUNT-L] Madison Square Garden
    2. Salut, listers. The possible Madison Square Garden connection is intriguing, isn't it? I am looking for HUNT family that Iived in or very near New York City around that time - three brothers who I am told were "very successful" and perhaps they were involved. The brothers were: Frank S. HUNT, born 2 March 1891; Phillip L. HUNT, born 22 June 1895; and Leonard G. HUNT, born c. 1902. You see they would have been just the ages to be wheeling and dealing in the 1920s and 1930s! These three came from Peabody MA and were the sons of Herbert Vincent HUNT and Mary [Shephard] EGAN. If anyone can connect with any of the above, please let me know. All hints and hunches gratefully received. Ginny Crawford VCrawf@aol.com Carmel Valley CA

    1. Unidentified subject!

    3. Help ! I'm trying to trace the parents of my GG Grandfather, Joseph Henry Blaire Hunt. Joseph was the subject of a murder trial which attracted much public interest in the UK in 1823/4. (The trial of Thurtell and Hunt for the murder of William Weare). Copious volumes have been written about the trial, but not one clue as to his parents. I know that his death sentence was commuted to life transportation, and that he arrived in NSW in July 1824 on board the Countess of Harcourt. He was sent to Bathurst, where he eventually married Mary Rogers, had children Joseph Henry and Angela, and died in 1861. Prior to his arrival in the colonies, however, I have few clues as to his parentage. I gather he was born in Hertfordshire or London c. 1793/4. He was married (possibly to Mary Notlage, 1813), and was living with his wife in Golden Square at the time of the crime. In the trial, there is mention of him holding the Army and Navy Coffee House in St Martin's Lane; of his previously being an innkeeper; and of prior sentences in Newgate Prison and Fleet prison. I gather his family had disowned him. There is also mention of a brother, who was a singer at Covent Garden. Hunt himself, in one publication, was listed as a professional singer. Any help to unravel this mystery would be most appreciated. Lesley Chaplin YASS NSW

I am waiting for poor Sandy in TX to try to "figure out what you said" I think he said !? :o) My MA HUNTs (Joseph and Martha) are 1600s but the reason your posting so interested me was that I am at a brick wall on my DUNTON line as well as HUNT etal. My earliest DUNTON is Joel b 1802 Pittsfield, which appears to be within ? 10 miles of Cheshire, mentioned by you. I have had no luck, on any list, getting a reply to DUNTON queries. I wonder if you possibly have anything else regards DUNTON in your research? Thank you so much , Honor D.

    3. Fellow Hunt listers, For years thee has been a rumor in our Hunt family that during the 1920's early 1930's there was a lawsuit or some type of court proceeding which concerned the property where Madison Square Gardens is located. Supposedly, it was brought about by Hunt descendants in order to clarify ownership. Has anyone else encountered heard of this? My Father, Lawrence Hunt, insists that his Father, Charles R. Hunt, received information concerning this. Ellen

But if it is God's will I am ready to go. ---Contributed ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ (same paper) DOUBLE FUNERAL Sometimes, troubles double up on people, the visitations coming very fast. Why we are, at times, made to feel that God frowns upon us, we do not know. His purposes often thwart our best laid plans, and our fondest hopes fail. The spectacle of a double funeral, two caskets, two funeral cars, two funeral sermons in one, two bodies placed side by side in one common grave, one a mother, the other a son, both mature in years, two families made to mourn, and countless numbers of relatives and friends stand almost aghast at such an unusual occurrance. But so long as humanity exists we must expect the unusual, the out of the ordinary to come upon us. We live to be bereaved. It is our common lot, but double bereavements seldom come to mortals, save in great catastrophes, such as floods, wrecks or mine horrors. On Nov. 24, James Hunt passed away, and his body was laid to rest in Fairview cemetery. On Friday evening, December 8, Elmer E. Hunt, a brother of James Hunt passed away at his home, south of this city, his fatal illness coming upon him, the day his brother was buried. On Saturday morning, Dec. 9, not many hours after Elmer died, his mother, also the mother of James, Mrs. William Montgomery, died at her home, southwest of this city. The two bodies were buried side by side in a common grave, at Fairview cemetery, last Sunday morning, the funeral services being conducted at the church, nearby, Elder Frank Reed of Hindsboro, officiating. He preached a most eloquent and afftectionate sermon, having, just a few days before officiated at the funeral of James Hunt. A large and sympathetic concourse of friends and relatives was present to render their last tributes of love and respect to the departed ones. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------- The Oakland Messenger Thursday Dec. 7, 1911 JAMES HUNT DEAD. Much surprise was caused, Wednesday, when the word went forth that "Jim" Hunt had died at his home southeast of the city. Mr. Hunt had been ill, seriously, for but 21 days, tho' we are informed that he had suffered more or less from a stomach trouble for about 15 years. The funeral was held at Fairview Church, Friday, at 11 o'clock, and the remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery nearby. James William Hunt was a son of Alexander and Mary Jane Hunt. He was born in East Oakland, Aug. 1, 1861, and he died at his home in the same township Nov. 29, 1911, aged 53 years, 3 months and 28 days. On Dec. 2, 1886, Mr. Hunt was united in marriage to Miss Asenith L. Brown and to this union eleven children were born, and these with the exception of one which died in infancy were at his bedside when the Death Messenger came. Mr. Hunt said a short time before his death, talking to his family, that he believed in God and his word and later that he knew Jesus would come to take him home. Besides his wife and children he leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn. Mr. Hunt was a good man, conscientious and honest, and dependable. The MESSENGER extends sincere sympathy to all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------
