    1. [HUNT-L] Your message
    2. Dear Faye, Thank you so much. I've been searching on the net for about five months also (for Hunts, Ordways, Wilsons, Popps, McVays, McKinneys and so on) and laughed out loud at your description of what new comers find. Too true! I lucked out when I sought the Castleman/Casselmans about five years ago (the old way) by stumbling over two geneologists with lots of the family line. In fact, I discovered that we (Thea Lois Castleman, dau. of H. S. Castleman) came from Germany not England in 1720!) Anyway, Faye, I really like your approach. I wonder if we could also include in each email message (about Hunts) the area, earliest area known for our particular line? So many are looking in the South or Texas and my great grandfather, William D. Hunt evidently went to IL from New York, as did, as a child, his wife to be Mary Lois Wilson Hunt. M. 1855. They died in Bancroft, Kossuth, Iowa. I do not know any more about William D. Hunt than that. But in each query that I make it seems I should mention him and his reported origion of NY. Mary was born in Palmyra, Wayne, NY in 1834. Her brother David gave his origion as Ellis Island, NY. There was also a 26 year old sister with them in the 1840 census in IL. No parents mentioned. Sorry this is so long. I like everything you say! Thea Castleman Windsor, CA

    2. All Members, There are many resources for genealogy tutorials available on the Net. Because of our august membership and their expertise, I thought to capture some "pearls" on our web site that could be shared with "newbies" (of which I still consider myself one). This project currently boasts two articles; "Surname Origins" by Ray Hunt and "Researching" by Sandy Hunt. I found them to be very helpful. The URL for this page is http://www.genweb.net/~hunt/list/genehelp.htm I'd love to see more. If you have some advice for our membership, please remit to me, privately, and I'll be happy to post at this site. Thanks. 1. [HUNT-L] Margaret Moore
    2. My grandparents to the 6th power were John Hunt (b. before 1693 in L.I., NY) and Margaret Moore (b.1695). I know that there has been a lot of controversy about which Hunt family Margaret Moore married into. I have found that Familysearch has Margaret's family reaching back to 1510. Does anyone else have this line, and does anyone have any solid documentation of the information given by the Mormon's? Thanks, Sharon Pisors

    2. I am very sorry if I offended anyone with what I added to Sandy's comment. Sometimes we need to put ourselves in the others place. Several of us try very hard to help HUNT seekers and it helps immeasurably if the person gives ALL the available information---even to saying, "This is all I have!" Even that would be a help. 1. [HUNT-L] Hello- Some suggestions and thought to sare about the Hunt list and e-mail From FAYE IN FLORIDA
    2. FEMayo
    3. First of all, the whole message system can be confusing. When you write someone a letter for a specific message first of all I would address it in the BODY of the letter not just at the top where it says subject... Include some type of identification of the person you need clarification from. for example: TO FAYE: Could you be more specific...give the state, dates you have... whatever The problem I had at first is that you are suddenly getting all these messages and if there is a question for you have no idea who they are asking. It took me a while to figure out that someone was asking me a question specifically. Keep in mind that we also are probably getting tons of e-mail ourselves.... I do and it takes ME hours to get through my e-mail even though I may be new to the Hunt group. Doesn't mean I don't get tons of e-mail already either. I would like to help but again being new, I don't know how to and don't have the data bases that you all are so fortunate to possess. Shoot, I am just now trying to decide what Hightower,_Hunt messages to save to my zip drive. Also, keep in mind that a lot of these people may have just purchased a computer and are lucky they can even get on line let alone find a geneology spot and ask a question. Even though someone may have been on computers for a long time (like ME) we have different skill levels and knowledge about the internet and how it use our particular set up. And, also consider that us "newbiees" to genology may have a difficult time figuring out the terms, how information if listed , and so on... this may seem so very basic to you old hands at genology. I had been searching on the internet for Hunts for about 5 months before I got hooked up with you guys.... And, I had found nothing.... but 10,000 hunt clubs and directions on how to hunt and 1,000 Hunt pages of people that I had no idea who they were. Like my cousin said who is researching Hunts the Old fashioned way without the internet.... there are so many Hunts that they are like the stones on the ground. He has been trying for YEARS traveling around many states. We find Hunts everywhere but not "OUR" Hunts. I was so delighted when I found HUNTS who are real people who knew what I was talking about. So, please take a deep breath and know that you are appreciated ! Perhaps it would help to send a basic page of instructions to be sent to the new guys when they join up. It may be worth the initial page to automatically send it to them (and/or) resend if there are problems. Faye Elaine Hightower Potter Mayo

Please, try to be polite, and at least email someone personally instead of embaressing them! I know that several of you have also posted and forgotten to give complete details. It is human nature to forget occasionally. Also, when someone is new, they may not realize they have forgotten something that may be vital. The Hunt I am looking for had a very unique name. We do not know where he was from before 1852, therefore, we search every record for anything that might click. Please, I am not trying to be rude. I think a little courtey should be considered. 2. Shirley: I have been VERY interested in this family for a long time, but my question is a hard one: Who was the father of Stephen Hunt Sr.? A Stephen Hunt (Sr, no doubt) was the administrator of the estate of Thomas Hunt of Bedford City, Bedford Co., Va. Estate appraised 23rd day of Jan. 1802; and Stephen Hunt signed as administrator. It was a small estate: one bay horse, saddle and surcingle, bridle, 1 pair of saddle bags, 1 trunk and looking glass, 120# bar iron, cash on hand (21 pounds), 2 bonds (looks like 205 lbs.), ditto (2 lbs.), two other illegible items worth total of 12 or 13 lbs. (Sandy---you'll have to tell me again how to make the English pound sign!). It was also signed by Julos Sanders, Stephen Hale and Lewis Arther (sic). Felicia P.S. These Hunts (Stephen and Caty,) were Quakers. -----Original Message----- From: Lovern <shklvn@bellatlantic.net> To: HUNT-L@rootsweb.com <HUNT-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, July 12, 1999 10:01 AM Subject: [HUNT-L] Hunt & Byrd Connections >Hi, Haven't posted anything for awhile but ran across this. 3. JoAnne, Nothing wrong with a novice question. Although people can put on a headstone whatever they wish, it would be highly irregular for a maiden name to be on a tombstone without the married surname also. Thus, the implication might be that your Hattie Hunt Holdsclaw was no longer married to Mr. Holdsclaw at the time of her death; or if he died earlier, she could have reverted back to her maiden name. Or it could be a mistake on her tombstone. Or her family perhaps never liked her husband! The possibilities are endless. A little more research into her background might give a clue. Regarding the plot number, the codes vary from cemetery to cemetery. However, my best guess is that the "45" is either a section number or a family plot number. Within the section or plot, each individual gravesite would get a letter (A,B,C, etc.). So it would seem that Hattie is perhaps buried in the 9th grave (letter "I") in the designated area. Again, these are not the only explanations, so be open to other information as it becomes available to you. Hope this helps. Perhaps others on the list have other ideas also. Elwyn D. 2. Pam: My Aunt had a friend, Cornelia DePuyster (sp?) Hunt, who was born in N.Y. (presumably in or near N.Y.C.) of an old and prominent Hunt family. I have a beautiful small oil portrait of her by a (probably) fine artist. My Aunt was a Hunt also, but I do not think they were kin, although they were such good friends that they pretended to be. I would like to find this family, as I would think they would like to have this portrait. I must have proof before relinquishing it. Bell County, TX - South Belton Cemetery HUNT Hattie 1820-1903 45 I Were/Are maiden names used on tombstones, and what does the ( I ) mean? This is the only listing with an ( I ) after the plot number ... Sorry to take up your time with these questions, but the people on this list seem to be the most knowledgeable, so I thought I would ask... Thank you for your time, Jo Ann Beasley Clyde, Texas

    1. [HUNT-L] Adelbert HUNT Allegany Co. NY
    2. I am still looking for information on Adelbert Vincent HUNT who married Florence Bradley of Friendship , Allegany County NY. I have no dates for Adelbert but Florence was born in NY in 1849. She was the daugher of Almira Scott and William Bradley and was one of 10 siblings including a twin sister, Flora. If you have any help for me I would appreciate it. Nana (NAY-na) RUTHERFORD Redell

    2. Lovern
    3. Hi, Haven't posted anything for awhile but ran across this. Thought someone might be interested. Got this from records from library. It was under Byrd Genealogy: Catherine "Caty Byrd b ca 1782 in Loudon Co, Va married Stephen Hunt Jr, in Bedford Co, Va 31 Dec 1801 son of Stephen & Mary Hunt Elizabeth Byrd b ca 1790 married 4 Jan 1834 in Franklin Co, Va to James Hunt son of John Hunt. Benjamin Byrd married his cousin Nancy Hunt (2nd wife) of Frnaklin Co, Va 18 of Nove 1844 d of Stephen & Catherin Hunt Martha A Byrd married in Franklin Co, Va 8 Oct 1850 to James McBride son of Thomas and Catherine Hunt McBride. Don't know if this will help connect the Byrds and Hunts together for anyone but thought this was interesting. Shirley
