Thank you for the previous information on Waddy Thorpe Hunt ... although not a match, I am not ruling out some sort of kinship ... the names are just too similar! I think John Irons statement covers whom Lucy Wimbish meant when she referred to James Hunt as her cousin in his Rev War pension application. If he was her brother, father or even grandfather she would have so stated. He was not a first cousin we know so she must been as John wrote " referring to someone who related and not defining their relationship." I have always considered this James as a possible grandson of Joseph Hunt because I have never researched that generation of Joseph Hunt's descendants. This James Hunt could also possible be a Hunt from Maryland. We know three Hunts from Maryland that lived close to Lucy Wimbish at some time that enlisted in the Rev War. At least my Hunt family who descend from those Maryland Hunts referred to the Hunts in Charlotte/Pittsyvania/Halifax Counties as cousins. This is a long shot based on information from my Grandfather. Supposedly my GG grandfather Matthew Hunt immigrated from Ireland>Canada>Hammondsport NY-. His childrens names are as follows, Thomas,George Wheeler, and one daughter Olive. I have found information on the SSDI to confirm that they did in fact live in Bath, HammondSport area. The rest of what I have is hear say, but from my Grandmother who was of sound mind. So back to my question, if anyone has Hunts with these names from Canada, I would like to follow up on them to see if there is a connection of some sort. Thank you for your time. Regards, Roger

Is anyone out there who knows about the Hunt family of Belfast area of Allegany County, NY? He was a teacher. He married Mary (Polly) Sellon about 1837. They had six of their seven children there. They later had a daughter in Wisconsin. He may be connected to Isaac Hunt. Do have his parents names, actual birthdate, or birthplace. Pat Baird Baird
More personal housekeeping. My apolegies to the Hunt List. I know of no other way.......... To the gentleman that inquired of us concerning "Betsey" Hunt. Please email us directly. This "Betsey's" husband was a Slecht/Sleight/Slack - NY State. You live in Western NY State - in a town on Lake Erie as I recall. I have no firm match, but do have suggestions and wish to pursue "Slack" with you in an attempt to back into the info. John jsc@i2020.net
On our list of "missing persons" is a Smith G. Hunt. He was of adult age in the mid-1800's, and living in NY. We have been looking for this man due to an inquiry which I believe came via the Hunt List. It was probably a posting from quite a few months ago. I have lost/misplaced the original request (darn!) (sorry!), and the inquiry may have been by direct email to us, and not from a Hunt List member. The request was for a geographic placement only. If interested, please contact us via direct email. At least one "Smith G. Hunt" can be firmly placed using the town records of Brewster, NY (Putnam County). I have both the primary and a high quality secondary reference. You should also be able to find him in the Federal/State Censuses from this period (!). FYI to those researching either Westchester or Dutchess Counties or a possible removal to western NY State from there. Check the Putnam County records. Many Hunts are in Putnam; several of whom are descendant from the Hunt families in the latter two counties. I think that I repeat myself here..... BTW, this is not a Hunt line that we have been "actively" researching, and it is not our line. John jsc@i2020.net

I do not believe James Hunt (1703-1795) enlisted during the Rev War. I have done genealogy on this family for over 20 years during which I was able to relate him to his brothers Joseph and Ralph and their birth in York County. Much of the material being passed on this site is regarding this family are the results of my research. I truly feel him enlisting would have been irresponsible and very much out of character. He was a prominent, educated and wealth man; he was one of the founders and leaders of the Presbyterian Church in Virginia; he was an acquaintance if not a friend of the governor of Virginia: he was the senior Justice of Peace of Charlotte County and thereby head of the local government. I had an article published about ten years ago in the local Charlotte County history and genealogy magazine about James Hunt. It was "Charlotte's First Gentleman Justice". The editor added a sentence at the end of the article with my agreement. It stated "As a public servant, Hunt used his experience from the Lunenburg court to lead a new county through its formative years and a great war with Great Britain." One has to only look at the court records of Charlotte Court to James Hunt never left the county with the possible exception very short periods. Fleetwood

Nancy, I am one of those lurking and hoping about the Hunt list as I know so little. I have run across the long very impressive genealogy of the Hunt families of Westchester County, NY, but could find no relation to mine. All I really know about my Hunt ancestors is that Mary Hunt married John B. Weddle on Saturday, 20 June 1827, both of New Paltz, Ulster County, New York, by the Rev. Moses Butts. The Poughkeepsie newspapers listed her groom as John B. Waddle in error. There was a Samuel Hunt living in New Paltz but he seems to be the same age as my Mary. I have had no luck with information available or paid researchers. You appear to know so much about these families of Hunt in New York. Mary & John Weddle had a son John Nostrand Weddle born 26 March 1830 in Lloyd, Ulster County, New York. The Weddle family were coopers and owned a cooper shop in New Paltz and one in Poughkeepsie. The Nostrand as their sons middle name makes me think there may be a connection with my Hunt or Weddle line to them. The name was Van Nostrand/ Van Ostran/ Van Ostrum/ Ostrum is seen all over the Hudson valley as far back and the 1500s. Keep me in mind, please, when you are searching. My Mary Hunt was probably born about 1800-1810. Thanks, Louise R.
