    1. [HUNT-L] James Hunt b. 1729
    2. FGourdin
    3. Although the DAR records show James Hunt (who married Rhoda Nunnlee) as being born in Ireland, many of those who came from Ireland came originally from Scotland and, as they were gradually forced out of Scotland, moved to Ireland and on to the colonies; hence, they were truly Scottish rather than Irish. This is particularly true of the early Presbyterians in this country, as Presbyterianism was more or less established in Scotland and many of our present day Presbyterian ministers still are revered if they have spent some time in school in Scotland. They even try to adopt the accent!. Felicia

    1. [HUNT-L] Hunt name
    2. Paul F. Hunt
    3. I don't know about anyone else, but I always thought the Hunt name was simple, and its derivation obvious. Wrong! I ran across a Hunt family I thought might be related. Turns out they weren't, and weren't even Hunts until the US Civil War. Their first US ancestor came to Pennsylvania from Switzerland, named Viesenard. That quickly became Wiesenhunt, and finally was shortened by a grandfather to Hunt when he enlisted in the Confederate Army. I guess the lesson here is: Don't make assumptions! The North East Ohio Civil War Roundtable is installing a plaque at Willougby Cemetery to honor the Civil War veterans there. If anyone has info on this man, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. 3. Barbara, The DAR 1994 Patriot Index, p. 1539, shows: James Hunt, b. 1729, Ireland, died Feb. 8, 1803, Virginia, m. Rhoda Nunnelle. Orderly Sgt. VA. Widow pensioned. American Genealogical Research Institute, Washington, D.C., 1978, p, 75, also lists James Hunt b. 1729 [no birth location], died 8 Feb. 1803; orderly sergeant in a VA unit; widow pensioned; married to Rhoda Nunnelie(sic). Katherine Lindsay Knorr, "Halifax County Virginia Marriage Bonds and Minister's Returns 1753-1800", 1957; citation of Bond: 20 December 1787. James Hunt and Rhoda Nunnally. Surety, David Roberts. Rhoda signs own consent. At the time of the marriage in Halifax County there were a number of Hunts living there who were from a larger clan of Hunts descended mainly from a James Hunt Sr. and a Joseph Hunt. James Hunt Sr. was still living and wrote his will in Oct. of 1794 in which he specifically named grandsons James and William P. Hunt, sons of James Hunt his son. He also named grandson James, son of dec'd son Charles Hunt. There's nothing I know of which points to a relationship of James who m. Rhoda N. to the other Hunts. Neither do I know of any documentation for an alleged birth in Ireland. The earliest I've seen Nunnelee/Nunnally in Halifax records is c1780 but really have never paid much attention to them. A widow's pension was indeed filed in Henry Co. VA, but I've temporarily misplaced copy obtained by the late Clara Hunt Miller when we were collaborating on this in c1991. Henry Co. didn't exist until 1776 when formed from Pittsylvania, but Pittsylvania was created from Halifax in 1767, so James & Rhoda lived not far from where they married. Oct. 27, 1785, the name of James Hunt, resident of Henry Co. VA, is found on a petition to the Genl. Assembly to divide Bedford County so as to create a new county and include a part of existing Henry. This division was approved and Franklin County was created by legislation in late 1785 and the county was up & running Spring of '86. In 1787 James Hunt appeared on the Franklin Co. Personal Property Tax List. He might be the identical James who had married Rhoda. I've not found a will for him in Franklin Co. nor any administration on estate. To confuse matters I'm sure Rhoda Hunt appears on Census of Henry County perhaps 1810 - Of course I can't answer your questions specifically. It would seem that as James and Rhoda married in Dec. of 1787, then none of their children were older than 16 when he died in Feb. of 1803. So all of them were legal minors and you could look in the records for guardian reports, etc. The suit you show in 1824 was dated 21 years after James had died, so by that date all the children were adults. The one who might have been c16 in 1803 was then c37. In order to work on identities of Hunts and Jones in the 1824 lawsuit you could ask your friend if she can send the rest of it - the part which states the subject of suit. What is stated is suggestive that "land ownership" is at the bottom of it. I'd suppose it must have been complicated after that long time since Spencer, Edward, and Daniel Hunt no longer lived in VA. You might find more if you go to the Halifax website. Hope this little bit helps some. Let me know how you make out.
