Hi all, to my surprise I received the following from ADA archives; letting you know an other avenue for research - for those whose ancestors or relatives included a dental professional! :-) (Of course the attachment wouldn't be accepted by rootsweb so I had to remove it from this E-mail.) The attached inquiry was forwarded to me for reply. The Archives of the American Dental Association houses the historical records of the ADA and maintains information on the history of dentistry and the people involved in the profession. The American Dental Association does not keep records or files on individual dentists or members historically. Our primary source of information on individual dentists is the directory of dentists entitled, American Dental Directory, published by the American Dental Association 1947-2001 (i.e. published in 1947, 1950 and annually 1953-2001). These directories present a comprehensive list of dentists (indexed alphabetical by name and listed by city/state) practicing in the United States for any given year regardless of ADA membership status (listings based on licensee rolls). I checked the 1947-1960 editions of the directory and there is no Oscar Sperling listed. The only Sperlings listed in those editions are as follows: Herman M. Sperling, Detroit, MI Julius S. Sperling, Miami, FL Marvin Sperling, Brooklyn, NY Bruce B. Sperling, Army Dental Corps and later San Juan, Puerto Rico Nathan Sperling, Los Angeles, CA For your information, the Archives of the ADA offer to family history/biography researchers a dentist look-up/research service for a $25.00 per name fee. I have attached a flyer describing the service and how to order it. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance or if you have any questions.
