The three dates preceding the date of the marriage, usually one week apart, are commonly known as the banns. You will see this frequently in marriage records, Protestant as well as Catholic. Today's wedding ceremonies might have a statement to the effect of "If anyone knows of any reason why these two should not be married, let him say so now or forever hold his peace."
