Beth, I am sure you realize that you will actually be in Romania when traveling in Transylvania. That said, you may wish to post you query on the Romania Mailing list. Two years ago, I traveled by automobile to Satu Mare (previously Szatmar) from Budapest. Satu Mare is just across the Hungarian border and on the western edge of Transylvania. I found traveling by car through Hungary was really not a problem but believe that I would strongly consider an organized tour if I were to travel extensively through the Transylvania area. My primary reason is my lack of knowledge of the Romanian language. I found that lack of knowing the language was not nearly the problem traveling in Hungary as it was in Romania, especially in the smaller towns and villages. I would have been at a complete loss had I not had a person traveling with me from Hungary that had a fair handle on the Romanian language. Even is Satu Mare, a reasonably large town, very few people understood English. If you do speak Hungarian, this would certainly help as we found some people that could communicate in this language. Hope this helps! Jerry
