The steppes are in southern Russia. Many peoples migrated from East to West across that region into Europe. I am now able to be more specific -- I found quite a nice map on p56 of _The_New_York_Times_Atlas_. It has an area labelled "Kirghiz Steppe". It is in the region, I described above. It is north of the Black Sea, north of the Caspian sea, running almost to western China.
