    3. Ted and Joe, Thank you for sharing this information. As a point of clarification, who kept the records prior to 1895 and more importantly where are the records kept today? I am researching my GGF who lived in NagyIda, AbaujTorna county (circa 1850's) which is now part of Slovakia (VelkaIda). Any information about who to contact, would be greatly appreciated. Can someone tell me where these records are located so > I can continue my research? > > Thanks > > Ted Hi Ted, just a slight correction: the churches kept on recording their parishioner's vital data - to this day - but the state took over the official vital record keeping after 1 Oct 1895. So duplicate records exist. In Hungary (as anyplace else) there are data protection laws on the books: 90 year for birth, 60 year for marriage and 30 year for deaths, which are restricted for research unless you are a direct relative. Within these protection boundaries the Mormons are filming also state records and sooner or later you will find them on their web site. Normally the mayor's offices have the registrars with their books. In Ganna the address is: Polgármesteri Hivatal c/o anyakönyvvezető 8597 Ganna Fő utca 52 Hungary Tel.: 011-36-89-351-034 But these people don't have time to do research for you. If you are interested in one specific person, you can turn to the Hungarian Embassy in Washington, D.C., to request official copies of the records. They will cost a few bucks, depending upon how acurate data you provide. Since 1828 each parish had to make copies of their books and send them to the State Archives (also the bishop's archives). From the Hungarian State Archives did LDS receive permission to make microfilm copies of those records, which you can find at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localitysearch&columns=*,180,0 Just type in nagyida and hungary and you will see their holdings for that place. Copy the film #'s of interest, go to your nearest HFC and put in an order for them. Joe Equinunk, PA - USA jjarfas@ezaccess.net --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by ezaccess.net]
