How many different ways are there to say Elizabeth and its diminutives in Hungarian? IS Erzebet and Orze two of them? I am going through the new book on Germans in Veszprem Megye and also my own data bank and am getting confused with some of the names. It is enough that surnames are spelled and mis-spelled many different ways but making heads or tails out of some given names doesn't make it any easier. BTW, the book is very good. It emphasizes the need to be able to read Hungarian to do research beyond names and dates. Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net
A family member on my mother's side, Gizella Csanfordi, sailed on the Rotterdam at the age of 7 with her Nogradi cousins, arriving in the USA Oct 10, 1905. Her mother's name was Elizabeth, and in the space where it asks the destination it lists her mother, Uyabhth (?), in Cleveland. It seems to me that I've seen the Hungarian spelling of Elizabeth beginning with a "U" in other instances as well but can't remember where. Check out the manifest (line 6) and see if you're seeing what I see.
