Margaret, Re your inquiry Has anyone tried to get Hungarian records out of Romania? .... I assume you mean by " Hungarian records out of Romania" those Parish and Civil Records for areas that are now in Romania but were part of Hungary prior to 1918 or so. If this is the case, for all practical purposes, the Parish Records that have survived are in the Romanian National Archives and the Civil Records (after 1895 I believe, but please check) are held in the "town halls" where the event took place. Let me use my personal experience as an example. My family was from Szatmar. I obtained birth and death records for them in the National Archives in Satu Mare, Romania (previously Szatmar, Hungary). To the best of my knowledge you cannot obtain copies of records by mail or other means than someone appearing in person at the Archives and doing the research personally. The Archives can be visited by appointment by a Romanian citizen or a non citizen previously registered to do so. I hired professional genealogist registered to review Archive documents. On one visit, I accompanied him and we waited two days to gain permission for access for a four hour period. Regarding the civil records, I obtained the birth record for my father (born 1907) through the Romanian Embassy. I had the exact date and town in which he was born and for a fee, a copy was finally received. What is ironic is that while in Satu Mare I visited the village hall in the town where my father was born and shown the actual birth record for my father but could not obtain a copy. I had to request the same through the Romanian Embassy after returning to the States. I strongly suggest that you employ a professional genealogist registered "to do business" at the Romanian National Archives to obtain records there unless you have Romanian relatives or friends in the immediate area who could search the Archives for you. Hope this helps! Jerry
