    3. The Oakland Tribune Calif. April 1,1908 Takes The Part Of Best Man At Wedding Of Ex-Wife The marriage of Mrs. Mary RUBY-BLACK-GOZ to Louis KOVACS this morning in the Justice Court at 8th. and Broadway, in the presence and with the consent of Louis GOZ, the bride's ex-husband, revealed an astounding matrimonial complication, and showed a strange theory of the marriage relation on the part of all participants. According to official records filed in the Superior Court, county recorder's office, justice court and county clerk's office, the marriage ceremony this morning appears to be the grand climax of a series of domestic sensations that have few parallels in this country, though common in Europe. This marriage and circumstances form a complete defiance and ignoring of every recognized standard of marriage today. And the case is rendered all the stranger by the fact that each step was accomplished in strict accordance to the letter of the law. This unique marriage presents the incongruous spectacle of an ex-husband not only consenting to, but felicitating his divorced wife on her union to the very man whom he had denounced a few months previous as the wrecker of his home and named as the co-respondent in his suit for divorce. Added to these complexities is the fact that the two husbands of the same woman join business with pleasure. They have sealed a legal contract of co-partnership in a big fruit ranch and, according to their own statements, all will live together under the same roof. In short, the two men claim that their attitude has changed suddenly from that of two rivals fighting for possession of a woman to that of "brothers and business partners." According to attorney Corson, all principals are Hungarians, and all have been married three times. Louis GOZ, a tailor, secured a divorce about 4 years ago from Mary GOZ, and the interlocutory decree awarded him the custody of 3 children- Louis age 10, Irene 8 and Ethel age 5. GOZ alleged infidelity as the basis for the suit in his complaint, and named Louis KOVACS, alias Smith, as co-respondent. Mrs. Mary BLACK-GOZ-KOVACS, that is, allowed the suit to go by default, claiming later that she did not fight it because GOZ had represented to her, previous to filing a complain, that, if judgment were entered in his favor,he would still allow her to have custody of the children. Upon investigation the court record shows prior to the granting of the divorce GOZ entered into a written agreement with his wife in which he signed the custody of the children over to her and also promised to pay montly alimony of $32. without reference to whether she should remarry or not. Last Nov., GOZ brought habeas corpus proceedings before Judge Waste, in Dept. 1 of the Superior Court to get possession of the children. At the time of the hearing he denied having signed the agreement. But Judge Waste, believing he did sign it it denied the petition. GOZ renewed the petition in the Superior Court before judge Harris. Harris denied Mrs. GOZ'S motion to modify the decree, and gave the man the possession of his children at last. Mrs. GOZ, now Mrs. KOVACS, acquired equity in a house in Fruitvale. Two days ago she signed a contract with her former husband, whereby she agreed to deed her interest in the home to GOZ, in consideration of his relinquishment forever of the custody of the children. GOZ kept his word, and just before Mrs. GOZ was married to KOVACS, GOZ turned the children over to his ex-wife. Mrs. Mary BLACK-GOZ-KOVACS gave her age as 27. According to the record, both have been married and divorced 3 times. KOVACS is a machinist, was born in Hungary 35 yrs. ago, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Yultska RACZ KOVACS. Mrs. Mary BLACK-GOZ-KOVACS is the daughter of Mrs. Mary RUBY and was also born in Hungary.
