Dear Elaine! In the period 1526-1918 Hungary was under Habsburg reign. Habsburgs are also ruled Austria, Bohemia and the throne of the Holy Roman Empire. During the Napoleon wars Francis I. was King of Hungary and Bohemia and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (until 1806, when the Empire was dissolved by Napoleon), and the Francis was the first Emperor of Austria. So in that wars against Napoleon the Hungarian Parlaiment (called Diet) was voted help for his king, Francis I. From the 1790's many Hungarians drafted into the armies. (Example one of my ancestor was in the war from 1804-1815) Later Napoleon reached Vienna and then attacked Hungary. In the next year will be the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Györ, where Napoleon won over the hungarian armies.
