Maybe someone can answer this. In the town of Nadudvar in Hajdu Megye I have come across a lot of Nagy surnames with letters in front of them. An example is K. Nagy, or B. Nagy. There were a lot more. Is this just to indicate a certain family line? There were also just plain Nagy surnames without a letter in front of it. It gives the first name as well. In my searching for my Bako family, Nick Gombash in his searching came across a lost brother of my grandfather, Geza Bako, whose name is Daniel Bako born in Nagyhalasz, Szabolcs Megye. I was always puzzled by the fact that my grandfather was born in 1878 and the next child, Daniel was born in 1885. I never found a death for him, but Nick came up with his marriage in Nadudvar, Hajdu Megye to a Julianna K. Nagy, dau. of Lajos K. Nagy in 1908. Supposedly they resided in Debreczen, Hajdu Megye. This answered the question somewhat of the missing years between the two births. I am very curious about Julianna's family name and what it means with the letter in front. Thanks. Sharon
Sharon, it's common custom - even today - to distinguish families with the same surname by giving each a 'nickname'. Some places use 'upper', 'lower', 'left', 'right', 'in', 'out', depending upon which part of the village they lived in. Other places use characteristics of the families themselves, like 'red', 'blond', 'limping', 'small', etc. If way too many were there, maybe they resorted to the alphabet.
