Margaret Joe and Margaret are right about not sounding alike. Actually Romanian (as some prefer this spelling) is a Romance Language such as French, Italian and of course Latin basis. For years I thought there was a connection between the two of them, but I now know it is because of Erdély (Transylvania) and it's loss of land by Hungary. It is fortunate Bela Lugosi taught us all about Transylvania through the movies, but the underpinnings of history of the land weren't featured. I will say though, I did a double take in listening to two men speak at a buffet in Florida. It sounded Hungarian, but I couldn't understand a word...I thought I was losing my hearing. Finally, I approached one and he laughingly said in Finnish to his buddy something that contained the word "Magyar:" He then explained it to me in English. I have told this story before, but repeating it for newcomers to this List. It is just that the first syllable accent inflection is the same in Finnish and Hungarian. It might be said they hold close ties to their language construction. There are less than a handful of words similar in Finnish and Hungarian and they are probably due to interjection through other reasons, other assimilation's. This is put simplistically, but I am not a linguist by any means. Marika
